How many coats of paint?

When painting the hull (sides) of a fiberglass boat with topside paint, using the ‘roll and tip’ method, how many coats of paint should it take? And, do I sand in between coats?

I am right in the middle of a repaint, Interlux recomends two coats fo primer and 2 coats of finish. This project will take two-three primers and who knows how many finall finishes with sanding done after each indivual coat
The safe bet is to follow the Mfg's steps, it is a lot of work and redo's really ............suck.....there is no word that better describe's them.

It depends on the paint. I agree with Tail Gunner, follow the mfgs instructions. I used S3 topside linear water based polyurethane, which, when thinned down, takes about 7-10 coats for a finished job. Also, I use S3 high-build primer which I usually roll on about two to three coats of.

I've also used Interlux and that only took two coats to completely cover.

I have used interlux and 2 coats works well.

Thank you for the responses! I'm practicing with a small portion of the swim platform first. I rolled on one coat and it actually looks pretty well, but didn't seem to give a complete cover, so I'm going to lightly sand it and put on another coat. Looks like it will look real good.
