Re: how many fiberglass layers?

We need a lot more info to give an answer, resin type, size of boat, what was on there from the factory, that sort of stuff.

16ft boat, poly resin, 9oz woven, 8inch high stringers. looks like it had single layer of 24oz originally

Re: how many fiberglass layers?

I would go 3 layers and see how it looks (with a rubber hammer).

I've got 2 layers of 10oz and 1 matt on the back of my transom, I might go one more yet, its too cold anyway. 20' boat.

Following the factory layup is always wise, then I add a bit more.

Re: how many fiberglass layers?

I just did the transom and stringers in my 21' Proline. I used 3 layers of 1708 Bi axle on the transom and 1 layer on the stringers. They are solid as rock!

Re: how many fiberglass layers?

With polyester you need to use mat as the first layer and in between each layer of cloth or roving. So unless you already have the 9oz cloth the better bet would be to use one layer of mat and one layer of 24oz roving. A biax product like 1708 or something similar will also work, but will be a little tougher to find and cost more.

Re: how many fiberglass layers?

well on my 14' glastron.. i'm just using the mat you buy from walmart off the shelf. . and the resin off the shelf there.. and i've got 6 layers on.. with light sanding on the top 2 and heavy sanding on the first two..

I'm doing a corner btw.

the opposite corner seems to be pretty bendable and the oppostie side seems to be the same..

how is a sure way to test it and make sure its good?

i'm putting the steel plate back on it that was previously on it..

Its best to start a new thread with your questions so your project can be followed easier with less confusion.

Mat has the least strength of any of the types of glass, roving or something else should be used to build strength, it will be much lighter, cost less and be srtonger.

The steel plate isn't needed, it was most likely put there by someone trying to strengthen a rotten transom.
