How Many Horses?

I've been trolling the internet for days w/ no luck--please help.

I have a Mercury outboard with Serial No. 0c143111. The previous owner says it is 15HP, but the cowl sticker says 9.9. How can I tell?

It runs like a beast, but I'm not sure that automatically makes it a 15!

Thanks!!

call any merc dealer, give him the number, he can tell you the year and hp. if they don't cooperate, you know not to take it to them for service.

Mercury dealer should be able to help you. It may well be a 15hp with a 9.9 sticker since several lakes are limited to less than 10hp. This would let you sneak in without being obvious about breaking the rules.

Thanks Roscoe. Yes, it's a 1989.
This is as far as I've been able to get. Are you able to crack the code re. horsepower? Why is it so difficult to find this online??

0c143111 does not work
The first digit is a zero, if that helps. The problem I have is that this serial no. range exists for both 9.9 and 15 HP Mercury outboards.

Looks like I might have to call the local dealer?

Dealer would be a good idea.
