I need to repair a failed repair from a PO. The hull is approx 1/4" thick and i have access to both sides. So I am wondering how many layers of 1708 is needed to make up 1/4" thickness?

Thanks Guys

2.

but do more layers on the inside.......the hull thickness is at least 3 layers of 1708 bi axe.....but you also need 2 layers of csm with that...

on a typical inside outside repair.....i may use as many as 5 layers of 1708 tith csm underneath.......but it depends on the situation

So the lay up order should be:

Inside:

1708
CSM
1708
CSM

Hull

CSM
1708
CSM
1708

Outside

csm over the substraight always and between each layer.

resin is brittle.....and the csm is a boundary layer that soakes it up (not exactly like that....but that is the simple version)

1708 includes csm so there is no need to put more in between it.

True, but adding layers of 1.5 oz matt between the layers (of 1708) is a much cheaper way to add bulk to a lay up, and helps absorb extra resin.

that and the csm on the 1708 is a much longer strand ....and its sewn on to the woven material......this will not allow proper bonding to the substraight....wet on wet is fine....but not for a boundary layer.....it will work.....but the csm will be a stronger/better bond

Just to answer your question .. its more like 4 layers of 1708 for 1/4" build.

I wished 4 layers of 1708 will give ya 1/2" .. but sadly it will not ..

IMO the .8 oz mat on the back of it is not sufficient for a primary mat bond .. so the first layer should be 1.5 oz mat.

After your mat is down you can go 1708 on top of 1708 without the extra mat.

Mat is not a build glass .. its primary function is for Bonding.

If you want to get build up fast use some Woving roving :) .

YD.
