how many layers

are two layers of 1.5 csm enough for my deck. I plan on coating with primer and then using kiwi grip non skid.

I have enough 6 oz cloth that i could cover it with a layer, but its such a pain because it runs/tears so easily that if i can do without it...i would like to.

IMHO not really. Not saying you can't cuz it is your boat but, usually 9 to 11 oz of CSM/Cloth is the recommended weight for your deck. I'd put down the 6oz cloth. Others may chime in, like I said JMHO.

yeah i guess the real question is does cloth add strength? obviously the CSM strands add considerable strength for their size.

on a deck......the 6oz offers a few things.

it offers wear ability....(durability) a smooth finish. and stregnth in a bi lateral direction. (where you want it)
it also is applied over wet csm with little or no resin added....it will soak up the resin from the csm. this will add to the glass to resin ratio, and make your deck stronger.

while it does not offer a lot of stregnth......the ease of application, the advantages, make it a good choice for the amount of glass needed on the deck.

Actually the CSM acts more as a binder for the resin mix and the cloth is where the strength comes from. The heavier the weight of the cloth and the weave the stronger the structure. 6 oz does add some strength and as OOPS says prolly all that's required. YD has posted a thread where he recommends useing masking tape on your cloth and I have used this in the past and works well. I even mask it in place and drape it down onto to the deck from the sides of the hull while wetting it out.

I say throw down a layer of 1708 have a real strong deck and a good surface to gelcoat just my .02
