Re: how many of us have concealed handgun permits?

I do firmly believe in the right to bear arms.
I do have a permit to carry concealed and have had it since I was 18, ( am 44).
In "my" opinion, firearms should not be strictly for civil servants.
Alot of good has been done by the armed public, but so has alot of wrong. I don't believe in vigilantes, (Spelled correct?) The right to bear arms comes with a responsibilty. You have the power to take life along with saving it.
!!!!!!!!!LOCK AND LOAD!!!!!!!!!

Bottom line, guns suck. The 2nd amendment is more outdated than Charlton Heston's "I am really Moses schtick". Lived in one of the worst neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Saw 3year olds shot to death. Most of the people killed or hurt by guns owned one. If our founding fathers saw this country today, they'd have a whole different outlook.
God Bless America

Re: how many of us have concealed handgun permits?

I recently moved from Southern California to Wisconsin. Unfortunately there is no permits available here. I held a State-wide permit there in California because of my old occupation. Yes, in answer to the LA post, gunfire noise was more prevalant at night in certain areas than tire squealing. But when the perp was crawling throught my living room window at midnight and S&W meet him in his mouth. I don't what was funnier, his crossed eyes trying to focus on the barrel in his mouth, or his expression. I have had to pull my weapon three times in the course of my former occupation. Each time was a threat of violence to me.
WITH proper training, certification, annual range testing, EVERY state should allow permits.

Now that Admin5 gave us this new forum, I want to first thank him, then WIEGH-IN,both feet. Some things are never "outdated"...Like self-defence, freedom, personal responsabilty, God, Mosses, Charleton Heston and Batman.
Guns do not have the physical abilty to suck.
If one searches for truth, it's a no-brainer to assume there is a God,for instance. The NRA were right when they claim that "guns don't kill people, people use guns to kill people",and "If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns". These are facts, not just "outdated" slogans used by violent gun folks. One has but to look at L.A., Miami, and other major Cities to see that some areas are as safe as Bagdad. Would I go into the Dumbar area of Fort Myers at night without a weapon? Not a chance. This is not because of the race of the people who live there. It's not beacuse I am there to shoot someone. It is because of the number of shootings that take place there. What chance do I have against an armed felon (illegal,by the way) if I am UN armed? Why do we call it "armed"?
Kinda hard to defend yerself,if you don't have any.
Until these people somehow succeed to get my sidearm away from me by re-writing the constitution (and trust me, some will never give up trying), I for one will carry it wherever I feel the need to.
But until that day, they should gather some comfort knowing the police have guns on,and so do many other folks, that will draw this weapon to save them.....If they are nearby.

Hi Nebraskaboater; Ever hear the speech, Now that all firearms are out of the hands of private citizens, it make it much easier for law enforcement and the military to keep order. This speech was made in 1935 by Adolph Hitler. Think about it!

Bob_VT, I like that Patrick Henry quote but the one of his I like the best is, "Give me liberty or give me death". At that time he owned 65 slaves.

I'll keep my guns, Thank You! Hal

I do support the right to bear arms. Knot2much had it right about Big Brother
watching, he does. Common sense is what this subject is all about and how we apply it.
Something to think about: Would you rather
be judged by 12 or carried by 6.

Re: how many of us have concealed handgun permits?

I agree that a person has the right to own firearms. I have a gun cabinet full - and a 38 in a lock box next to the bed. These weapons are for hunting and personal home protection. As for average citizens carrying firearms on the streets - I do not agree. To many people can't control their temper and tend to go into a rage with the slightest provocation. Those people do not need to have a gun readily available to them during a moment of anger. So, where does the line get drawn - I say only law enforcement and protective services personnel should be on the streets with a gun. Once again, I do believe in gun ownership, but not the right of the average citizen to carry one on the streets. From a retired military man.

Re: how many of us have concealed handgun permits?

An individual who carries a firearm, legally or not, and uses it in an unlawful manor, is a criminal, and should do the time for his crime. The truly amazing thing to me, is that, to a large degree, the people who pack heat DO NOT become deranged gunslingers. Quite the opposite in fact-they go out of their way to avoid trouble, counter the stereotype. In my line of work(manufacturers rep for French firearms company, licensed importer) I can carry what I choose, but mostly choose not to. Thirteen years in the Golden Gloves organization taught me that very few people can take a good quick left hook that gets off cleanly. To those who choose to carry, I say good luck, hope push never comes to point, so to speak. I suggest anyone considering the idea to read Massad Ayoobs fine book "In the Gravest Extreme" which will prepare you for the task, and help with the fearsome aftermath if it ever comes to that. The ramifications of a shooting, even if found to be justified, are awesome. "Those who would sacrifice some liberty for some safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety". Benjamin Franklin, 1777.
Best,
Ted

Re: how many of us have concealed handgun permits?

I too have a permit to carry, recently expired, but soon to be renewed. The sole purpose of the 2nd amend is to ensure that others besides the military/police have the right to bear arms. It's a means to keep your gov't in check. I like the reference to Hitler's speach. I wonder... if every Chinese had a gun... would they have the same gov't tomorrow??? out law the guns, box cutters next, then on to bats and clubs. It's not the weapon that commits the crime, I think it's operator related. Wake up America!

Re: how many of us have concealed handgun permits?

Have been around guns all my life. A 12 gauge with buckshot is much better then a 9mm. It might not be as easy to swing around in the front seat of your car or to carry under your shoulder, but it makes a much bigger hole. I have a concealed weapons permit and only carry on my person while hunting if needed. But it is almost always in the truck or the boat.

Walt, Wished I could have seen that jet skiier when the sling shot found its mark! Lost a good popping cork on a boat one time!

Don't have permit but 100% for 2nd Amend.
Our Constitution was adopted only after the Bill of Rights was added, as it was unacceptable without the same. Why was the 2nd part of this? Study historical letters
and documents from this point in history and it becomes evident that the 2nd was to protect the citizenry, not from criminals,
wild animals, or foreign enemies; it was to afford protection from GOVERNMENT1
Nuff said.

---jim--

Just my tuppence.

You "antis" out there,

Get your heads out of the sand. Maybe we should outlaw bathtubs and five gallon buckets-children die in them too. We don't hear about that on the nightly news.

The problem with children dying from gunshots is STUPID parents-and criminals. There is no such thing as an "accidental" shooting. They're "stupidental" shootings.

Oh, I'm sorry, the government will raise children for us. Make them good little citizens.
Sorry, I know this scares you, but I'm raising my own. Guess what, they're smart and know how to take responsibilty for their actions. Something lacking today.

I think I'll just sit down and wait for my government stipend so I can go get some government cheese and watch TV 22 hours a day. I know-PBS. That brain melting contraption that many people worship has ruined our nations ability to THINK-a lost art.

I am a product of the public schools-before they went off the deep end. My teachers taught us how to think-not what to think.

I have opinions and values and I'll live according to them. Trouble is, some think their opinion is superior and will get some government agency to back them up. My rights to own a firearm are in writing. Yours to take them away from me are NOT.

Venting complete! :)

I firmly support the 2nd Amendment. As a child I was surronded by firearms. My family as well as most of my neighbors had firearms. The thing about then that seems to be a major problem today is that we, (the children), knew not to touch the weapons unless we were on our way to the woods or someone was in the house that wasn't suppose to be. I feel that there is nothing wrong with RESPONSIBLE people having firearms. If they are RESPONSIBLE they will , in turn, teach their children to be responsible with firearms as well.

Trouble is, too many irresposible individuals are starting to stink up the barrel. Joe Idiot thinks it cool to flash his hand gun in front of his children because those are the only persons in his life that he can impress. 90% of the Bad Youth in our society today are raised by BAD Parents. I witnessed a woman screaming at her child while I was leave the doctors office. I gave her a good stare, but what else can you do. I don't talk to my dog that way. Just hope that little boy turns out ok.

And the cycle grows........

Sorry to ramble, but gun control is not the key to our problem. Maybe birth control?

Ranger and EQ,

Those people are not parents, they're "handlers". They do not parent their children, they want to pawn them off on someone else.

People have children, sheeple have kids!

Venting complete-2! :)
