Re: How many of you have made a survival kit for your family?

Defendable island, I love that idea. My mom owns a farm with pigs, chickens, cows, horses, goats so that is my island in the middle of no where. Yeah it is a sad fact that most of the guns i own are for defending what is mine from my country-men. That hurricane in New Orleans showed me that when the police are not there to help things get way out of hand. Of all the things for survival the best is to be informed about the processes that were once common knowledge like smoking meats, using a dutch oven, hunting and fishing, gardening. I have all this stuff to help me out but when it comes to keeping meat from spoiling when it is 90 degrees outside without electricity well my wind up lanterns, glow sticks and weather radios aren't worth the plastic they are made from. Some canvas and a hole in the ground i can keep meat for 3-4 weeks ready to eat and not to bad tasting either.

I had some Turkeys out on RR island fer a season, but they did not survive the cold weather, even though I fed 'em n' all. If the SH** did actually hit the fan fer a long term problem of some sort I would try ta get a cow n' chickens out there, if I could get feed fer the cow, (goat if not: [sorry RubberFrog I might have ta learn ta eat goat cheeze if yer lurkin' out there]). I don't plan ta keep animals on RR island, (unless there actually is an emergency) as their carp attracts bugs. RR island has very few bugs, (it maybe the winds that blow 'em off there, [but the Lake has relatively few bugs as well]), n' I try not to give 'em any reason ta stay if they fly by!! :D:D JR

Prolly ,as they were followin' Bro Haut when he rowed over to the place. He did not show up EXACTLY when he said he would, (he did show up though), so I keep a small row boat n' canoe there. I hate to wait fer someone to pick me up when it's a five minute row!!!!! Don't know why they were followin' me Bro, (musta been some anti Big Nanny Gubmint activity when he was an angry young lad n' Jersey n' all)!! :)

N' yah there still are those pesky wasps on the ol' mountain, I went up to kill 'em with some raid, n' they were hidin' n' tricked ol' Murky. N' the next week me cousin got stung!!!! I'll get 'em!!!

Not too many skeeters though!!! N' Lord knows there are the worlds' largest SLUGS there! Me sweetie really luvs those slugs!!

Scaaty, ya aughtta bring flatty up next year. The Lake is 2 1/2 miles long and flat calm in the mornin'!!! I'll bet the neighbors would luv a screamin' tower blastin' down the mirror at 5:00 AM!!! Great sport! JR

During the first Gulf war,I was called into the reserves and had to leave my family in Israel, while I was out in North Iraq with my Kurdish trainees.
Before I left,I made sure that my wife had a safe chemical warfare room, complete with air tanks in order to create over pressure and of course water, food, gas masks, atropine shots and the rest. This was not so crazy, since we had incoming missiles very close to our house.
Ever since,I just have kept up with renewing all that gear, even when we moved back state side.

If the stuff hits the fan, I'm heading to Western NC and living in the mountains Eric Rudolph style!

Worked for quite awhile didnt it.I could have sworn I saw something in the woods while I was out fishing once.

Re: How many of you have made a survival kit for your family?

I voted what fer cuz Hank Jr. said itbest- A country boy can survive. I've got enough weapons and ammo stockpiled to last a while, way more than unc sam would like if the truth is known (not political, it applies to all govt.). I have the skills necc to not only survive but to prosper. If I had to stay at my own place I could get by but it would be rough. I'm in the sticks and we have some cattle around along with wildlife but not that much in the way of water. If I was able to get my family to my dads (about 9 miles by road, 5 by the woods) life would be fairly easy. I have my horses there so transportation is taken care off. He has an abundance of wildlife (deer, hogs, fowl) and a 50 acre lake of his own (well his families but he's the only one within 150 miles of it so..) so water and fish is taken care of also. There is plenty of woods to use for heat. Lots of dilapidated bldgs ( it was a vaction campground before grandpa closed it down) that could be used for additional shelter or building materials for the smokers/traps/etc. My Dad is 3/4 crazy already thinking they are comng to get us so he's pretty well set too. Yep, I think we'd do just fine.

I dont have a so called kit but I have supplies and a back up power supply for about one week. I have several weapons to protect my family against several everyday robbers but thats about it. I dont have a gas mask and anti chemical weapons medicines and all that but Im sure plenty of people do.

I have an emergency first aid kit (a backpack filled) that I carry in the car with me and as far as a survival kit, if we make it outta here with our boat, dog and paperwork thats all I really care about.

Re: How many of you have made a survival kit for your family?

This question and all the varied responses closes in on the essence of why I enjoy this forum so much.

Anyway, yes, I've got a survival bag that would sustain myself and family for a couple three days on the road. Should something happen where we needed to bug out of town on a moment's notice we've got a soft place to land up around the Oklahoma/Texas border. Lots of canned garden vegtables, dried venison, water filter, fuel canisters, firearms....

If absolutely necessary the 4 of us could survive almost indefinitely as long as I could catch fish and shoot the occasional game animal. It would get steadily more and more uncomfortable, but we'd be out in an isolated area with a roof over our head vs the chaotic hell our city would turn into should society collapse.

I sometimes ponder what it would be like to be tested in that fashion....how fast could I shed my taste for easy living and adapt to a harder existence where my decisons truly had life or death consequences?

Re: How many of you have made a survival kit for your family?

Mr. Tree, I think me Bro will have ta settle fer bringin' jus' his Sweetie, so let's bag the real dumb idea 'bout bringin' the girls, (way too much trouble n' they may have their own kids n' all), n' they would be tellin' Scaaty, Bro Haut, You, n' ol' Murky what ta do n' all. I get enough of that with me own Sweetie, n' Bro's Sweetie is real nice.

Now as to bulls, hmmmmmm, don't like those pointy things, (n' those don't look like too much fun on an old tippy barge crossin' the lake), I was thinkin' milk cow if we could feed her. We would have ta quarter those big fellers with the horns n' smoke 'em fer the winter. You could bring a couple o' pigs, a young milk cow, some chickens, n' maybe a goat if we couldn't get the feed fer the milk cow, (we could feed Rubber some goat cheese if he decided ta head our way). There is an agricultural area 'bout 10 -15 miles from the lake. JR
