Re: How many outboards do you own?

1) 1979 Johnson 2hp -occasional use as a canoe motor
2) 1975 Johnson 6hp -was my primary trolling motor, probably will not be used now b/c #5 but will keep for kiddie motor
3) 1982 Evinrude 15hp -backup for using on extra boat when we have company out
4) 1970 Evinrude 25hp -probably to be sold this spring, replaced by #5
5) 2007 Mercury 25hp EFI -bought last week, looking forward to trying it out
6) 1967 Chrysler 45hp -oldie, but won't die... still used for tubing on little 14' runabout
7) 1980 Mercury V150 -on a ski boat, had since mid 80's still a strong runner despite regular abuse

1957 Evinrude 35
1967 Johnson 20
196? Johnson Super Sea Horse 40 electric shift
196? Evinrude 40 Lark manual shift
197? Chrysler 35
1981 Chrysler 100
1yr old 30lb elec trolling motor

I love outboards, and boats for that matter, but outboards are easier to hide from the wifey. Still looking for a clean cheap OMC or Chrysler 50-60hp.

Do ya ever wonder why we all seem to still have motors that are 30, 40, 50 years old? I always felt that these models were easier to work on and lasted much longer than you would expect. Hey, wait a minute, I forget to include my electrics:

Of course they do. Older tools were that way. Back then, stuff was made to last. These days, the world is into disposable everything. That includes cars, boats, outboards etc. Our shop is full of Delta and Craftsman tools from before the war, and during the early 50s, that are well ahead of modern tools as far as quality.

If we are going into electric motors, I got a few I can list
1999 40 pound MK All Terrain
2003 50 pound MK Powerdrive
1988 43 pound Evinrude 12/24v

On the contrary, I feel that electric trolling motors are getting better as the years go by. The new technology is benefitting them drastically, whereas it hinders the life of outboards.

1966 Evinrude-3 (folding)
1967-Evinrude-3 (folding)
1975-Johnson-4
1974-Johnson-6
1975-Johnson-9.9
1998-Honda-8

1975 Johnson 50

All run great. The Honda is the "misfit" and requires more maintenance than all the others combined.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

BaconBiscuit--I want to see your merc 20 with 11 hrs. on it when you get it. How about a pic of the others?
Me:

1942 2.5hp johns. HD-20 running, needs new condensors, though.
1955 7.5hp evin. -perfect
1953 10hp johns. * 2, one great, one not adj. right yet.
1955 10hp johns.--I love it.
1956 10hp johns. --love it, but needs a new skeg
1956 15hp evinrude --love it, runs great, needs paint/decals/ lower crank seal for reliablity
1957 18hp johns. *2 --love 'em, one leaks a little, prob. drain plug washers
1958 18hp evinrude--can't live without it
1976 merc. 7.5hp--like it, but won't have it long
1972 merc. 9.8hp--like it a whole lot, plan on keeping it forever
1984 merc. 25xd electric start --bought it for my dad, needs decals and l.u. work for reverse slippage, but runs great
1999 johnson 25hp-- duck hunting workhorse
Paid for but hasn't arrived yet--1954 evinrude 25hp electric start tiller (I'm very excited to see it and get it running).

I'd like a 50's 3hp one day to complete all my oldy urges and possibly an early 50's johnson 25 and I will be "finished" with my collection.
The End?;)

Well me and my grandfather are up in wisconsin until sunday of this week. But anyway we drove down from Milwaukee to Orland Park Chicago to visit my great uncle george who had the motor. So we got to his house and he took me into the garage and their the motor was. It looked as if it had just been pulled out of the box. He handed me the owners manual and some other paperwork and said it's all yours.

Boy am I excited the motor is a red band edition don't know if that means anything. The serial # started with 22 so I think its a 67 but I couldn't get all the #s because we were in a hurry. So we loaded it up in the car and took it to ups and shipped it to our house down in Florida. I'll have pics by next weekend.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

If you don't hurry up I'm going to finish my '53 evinrude 25hp and beat you to the pic posting! I can't wait to see your merc---make sure you get some good closeups from the front and sides. Probably my favorite looking black mercury of all time below 90hp. That red seems to just glow against the black.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

1969 25 hp Johnson -- very light and fast
1991 4 hp Evinrude Deluxe -- a real fishing motor
2004 40 hp Mercury Classic -- so much power for me!

1986 MK 28 Electric, transom motor -- this gets used big time
2001 MK 55 Electric, bow motor -- on quick-release bracket

All for the same boat, my 1968 14 ft. tinny.

Re: How many outboards do you own?

When my father (who liked to keep stuff he never uses ;) ) passed away, I got
-197X Evinrude ski twin 33hp (in storage for the last 20years)
-198X Johnson super sea horse 40hp (in storage for the last 10 years)
-197X Johnson 70hp (the main outboard we used for the last 10 years)
-2000 Honda 4stroke 15hp (bought for pontoon, never used!)

and I just bought for my new boat a :
2008 Mercury 4 stroke EFI 115hp

guess what I'll be using the most?

Getting pics on in a little bit but heres the story. So i got the motor and I looked under the cowl it looked great original spark plugs i could see the bottom of the coils they looked new it had original factory grease. So i put it in a bucket dreaming that it would start on the fifth but that wasn't the case. It stated on the fourth pull and it ran great it idled and pumped water and shifted great.
it was fantastic it hadn't been started 15 years. I'm putting it on the boat next week end.
