How many quarts of oil for a fresh rebuild Mercruiser 260 1981

Just go a new engine rebuilt all new internals high volume oil pump. I put 5.5 quarts in like manual says and it's up to the add mark. Is this normal or is my dipstick to short? Thanks in advance.

it just has little bigger pan than the one you had. fill it to the full line and you will good.

it's the same pan I had on my other block

12 qts plus 1 for the filter, that is assuming you put a 12qt oil pan on when you installed THE HI-VOLUME PUMP.I will gaurantee that with a standard pan you WILL LOSE the rod bearings the first time you get to 4400rpm.

12 qts???? The book said the engine holds 5.5 qts

ok, I see what your talking about now. He put my standard pan on I'll call him tomorrow and find out about the bigger pan.

A hi-vol pump will such all 4 qts of oil out of the pan in a hurry.leaving the pump sucking air and leading to bearing failure. a 12qt may not fit in the boat beacuse of the deep sump, that requires a longer deeper pick-up tube from the oil pump.A hi-vol is not necessary for a normal motor. The standard pump works just fine.
