How many RPM's is safe?

Hi I'm back with more questions. I have a Chevy 305 and was wondering if 4000 RPM's is safe or 4500? I'm very new to boating and I don't want to blow this thing up.

That's about right for WOT.

You should be able to get 4200-4600 at WOT.....
If you can only get 4K, you need some fine tuning to find it.....

It goes to 4600 wot but it hums along nicely at 4000 so I keep it there. I was afraid to go higher but it will.

Shouldn't hurt it a bit. Marine engines are designed to run at higher rpm's for extended periods of time, they are built with higher quality parts than there automotive counterparts. I am able to run 4600 or so with mine as well, but always tune it back down to 4000 or below for fuel savings vs the 4 or 5 knots I'd get with the extra rpm.
