How many seats would YOU install?

Hey guys... I just ripped the two sets of back to back seats out of my boat as well as the two tiny singles that sit on either side of my engine cover. The wood was rotted to hell, and the vinyl torn, so the foam was just soaked. I love the amount of room in this thing now, except I know I need seats. Its a 20' Stingray with a Mercruiser 4cyl. I'll leave the areas next to the engine seat-free so it'll be easier to climb in and out (as well as make room for beer coolers :p ) I want to install pedestals, but cant decide if I should do 2 or 4... Will 4 pedestals be overcrowding this thing? Maybe just two pedestals, and keep the little seats on either side of the motor?

Any opinions?

Thanks

Alex

Give your passengers knee pads and tell them to hold on? :p

put in 4 pedastal seat bases, flush mount and have 4 seats made up. if you only need 2 only put 2 in the boat. but at least youll have seats for 4 if you need them.

lingcod

Same as bondo, 2 captain swivels and a big padded ice box (seats 4 or 1 sunbaking!). I like the area next to the engine box kept clear so I rebuilt the engine box, now it's a table/casting platform/seat & most importantly - sound deadener.

Aldo

Bondo and Aldo.... I was thinking the same thing... I was just checking out Cabela's for 2 new pedestals and seats. I was just a little concerned about people having to sit on coolers while running around the bay. You two have any problems with that? I suppose if there's enough beer and ice in the chests, they're not going to budge much.

The only problem I have with this setup is the captains chairs wont be in very good positions for fishing... I think I can live with it though.

Aldo... you rebuilt the motor cover? I'd like to do the same, mine is ugly as hell. Is there any way to just buy a new cover?

Alex

RE the sitting on coolers thing. I was going to suggest bench seats against the side of the boat with storage underneath. They're generally in the pontoon section of the boating catalogues. You could them, plus a couple matching pedestals for the front two seats. They also make large coolers with cushions and swing away backs to serve this funciton. finally, you can get top pads and mounting hardware to install large Igloo (brand) coolers to act as seats.

The layout of you boat would be a factor in how you proceed. In my case, I have a large empty floor area and very high gunwales, sitting on a padded box doesn't present any danger - even in rough seas. I have the icebox clipped down to the floor and have also sown in leather straps (grab handles). Engine covers are available pre-made but I didn't like any of the designs available and they didn't seem strong enough for my intended purposes, I built it out of 3/4 inch treated pine board and covered it with marine carpet - it's very heavy but that doesn't bother me, I'm not a speed demon.

Aldo

Do you know where I could look at engine covers? Web sites maybe?

Sorry Alex, I can't help with that. I'm in Aus and I searched the old fashion way - leg work - around my local boat manufacturers.

Maybe try google?

Re: How many seats would YOU install?

im putting in two bucket /captains ,,,recovered the engine cover and recovered the side boards next to the engine cover ......and i have 1 taller seat on an air/gas pressurized post [for comfort] that im either gunna put in the middle as far back as i can get so i can fish off the sides by swiveling either way or putting two mounts behind the captains seats and mount it on the side i wanted that day............another cool thing i saw was some portable deck chairs that fold out and you can move around were you want...

Re: How many seats would YOU install?

I would put in one pedestal for the captain and flank the passenger side with a cabelas 56" bass bench. The benchs fold down, so you can use them as a table for things if not needed. behind the captains chair flank the right side with 1 jump seat. That config gives you seating for five and leaves your rear open for coolers which you stated can get a couple more people for a total of 7 if needed.

I have a 17 foot boat and added 4 pedistals. I placed the rear pedistals a bit farther back than you would think for 2 reasons
•
• To give the people behind more room
• When turned around they are perfect to troll from
