How many things can one jerk do wrong in 15 minutes?

This happened at the fish camp on LOTW last week. Angle Outpost is a musky/walleye/smallmouth fishing camp populated by dedicated fisherpersons. The marina is full of walleye boats and guide boats, plus my Montauk.

One evening about 9:00 I see a gathering at the ramp and walk down to see what's up.

There is a big deckboat on a tandem trailer cattywampus off the side of the ramp with two wheels buried in mud and one axle off the end of the concrete. It is hooked to an Expidition which is spinning all four wheels, unable to move it for'd or aft. Three launching guide posts are broken off and floating about in the narrow channel.

There are two gatherings. In one a glassy-eyed, nubile young woman is explaining that her "honey" has bought an island and they are going there to celebrate the 4th. The deck is piled with party supplies. No PFDs are in sight. The only electronics on the boat are a stereo and a cell phone.

In the other gathering a glassy-eyed young man is getting advice. They decide to push the boat off the trailer, then see about getting the trailer out. Somebody asks him where his bow line is. He says, "Huh? Whazzat?". There is no rope on the boat. A search fails to produce a rope, so I hook my anchor rope to the bow eye and we push her off.

I then hook my truck to his front tow hook and with that help he gets the trailer out.

I tell the young man that he needs rope and PFDs before he goes anywhere. He says he will buy my anchor rope. I say it is not for sale and detatch it from his boat.

Now the fish camp operator asks him if he has a map and knows where he is going. He produces a real estate map. His island is on the southern edge of the maze of about 10,000 islands in the NW section of the lake. It is on the US side of the border.

Several older gentlemen are urgently advising zombie-eyes to get PFDs, rope, GPS and even a guide befored venturing on the lake.

The boat is too large to maneuver in the marina so we turn it around by hand for him and he takes off, sideswiping my Sunshine III on the way out (no damage).

Yes. They got lost. Yelled for help on the cell phone. They were found, pulled off a rock bar and towed in (to a different fish camp) the next day.

I would be willing to bet that they still think that... PFD'S are only for people that cant swim, your a *&#%^%$# for not selling them your rope,You should not have had your boat in the way of theres, the real estate agent gave then the wrong map, some one put to many islands out there, and the lake is to big

And with some, you don't need hardly any money to have more money than brains.
I bet I had more fun running around Warroad River on the SW corner of the lake with a free boat and $100 outboard than he did up there on the NW with his (I assume) expensive boat :D .

While everyone can be ignorant at times, it is the ignorant people that do not stop to take advice from the experienced that endanger others. I am glad no one got hurt. Unfortunately, this is the type of guy who will never stop, listen and think until someone gets hurt.

JB, thanks for helping the guy out. There are a lot of good samaritans out there that do not get enough attention or praise. You did what you could and offered some very good advice. You can lead the the ignorant to knowledge, but you cannot make them partake.

what a dufus! and to think he was putting himself and the girl's life on the line, by going out in such a complex maze of islands...

did you get any pics of them? or at least the 'nubile' female? ya might have at least mentioned she should just dump the guy and hang out with you guys to be safe/secure, or at least until the guy verified how to find the island he owned... i'd bet your grandson would've greatly appreciated that thoughtful gesture... ;) :D

Re: How many things can one jerk do wrong in 15 minutes?

good gad almighty, I thought I ran into some dumb people. The 4th we stayed home and watched and heard the fireworks safely. The 5th was a great day here in upstate fishing country Maine.
Went through 12 gals of fuel, cruized the lake. On the dock was an event and half. A gentleman was backing his four winns inand didn't unti his stern lines nor his straps. Than he ran behind his boat, boasted he had plenty of room when he almost hit my bow. I jumped in to save my boat, his son was in the four winns. He lost all battery power, had no trim. I lifted hiw motor, dropped his trim manually, he released his lines, then went to the marinna for help. No checking or preperations at all. Just left his boat tied to the end of the landing. I couldn't get a mooring this year, so I land mine every time, but some people shouldn't even think about boats until they master life.

yikes, I know that area... that lake can be nasty. You can bet they'll be there in the winter with their brand new sled(s) to try their hands at snowmobiling. Some of those passages don't freeze well. Maybe there'll be a Darwinian ending yet!

Is Grumpy's still open? What was the other bar/restaurant... Pine Tree Pub(?) Are they open these days?

Brent

Sounds like a bunch of folks here in SD... this couple must've traded in their PWC's for a new boat ;)

:D Hey JB, it is stories like that one, that can make even a NewBe like myslef, feel like an Ancient Mariner. I mean not even a ROPE!

Oh and JB and Newmanns, thanks for clairifying cattywampus. When my Dad worked in Saudi Arabia, he had an English guy working for him, describing something one day, and said it was Cattywampus. Dad being from Louisiana, wanted to know what cattywampus was. He said "You know, Gogglywoggly." Dad was chuckling, realizing he was talking about some Electrical conduit, said "Can you describe it?" The guy was a riot, he bent his arm and hand and fingers, and said "You know, It's all crooked." Till I read this post, I always thought dad was saying cattlewompas." Thinking it looked like Cattle trampled it. Dad said, the guy always made a day at work interesting.

GodsBeast

Re: How many things can one jerk do wrong in 15 minutes?

Nothing better than a 12 pack and a lawn chair at the ramp for good entertainment.

I carry 10 pfd's and the boat is rated for 8 people. Never know if your gonna need an extra.

There is about 500 feet of rope on my boat of varying size and length. Mooring lines, anchor lines, skirope, inflatable tow rope. Just basic stuff. I have 2 anchors.

I have two handheld vhf radios. One for the shore party and one on the boat.

I have flares and signalling devices on board.

I get maps of everywhere I go.

I carry tools and an assortment of parts.

I never leave without a float plan with someone at home (usually verbal for a weekend at the lake... launch ramp and general area)

All this and I'm usually only 10 to 20 miles from the marina and with a group of friends.

I grease the bearings after every other trip and check the tires every trip.

I Check the engine, outdrive, etc every trip. Maintainance is better done in the driveway than on the water. Usually cheaper too.

I prepare to launch away from the ramp, in the ready zone.

If I'm stand on and your give way I will move out of your way if and only if it is safe to do so. You'll hear five short blasts from my horn.

I still make mistakes on the ramp and on the water. I am concerned about correcting them.

Don't mean to harp here but I WAS a boy scout and I believe in being prepared. If everyone took preparation and safety seriously the number of boating accidents and deaths reported each year would approach zero.

BoatSafe
