I was at the marina yesterday working out the cost of commissioning my boat in April. I was looking at the Yam catalog, the mechanic saw me. He said he knows someone who needs a used engine that would buy mine complete with controls, cables, oil tank etc., and I could buy a new one. I have a '93 Yamaha 250TXRR which I repowered with a refurbished head in '02. I asked him what I could get for it, he said about $5,000. He would then sell me the new 250 Yamaha 2 stroke for $17,700 complete with labor, controls, prop, gauges, etc. and get paid for installing my old engine on the buyers boat. Do you think I could get $5,000 for the repowered 93 Yam 250? Is $17,700 a reasonable price for the purchase and installation of a new Yam 250?

What's wrong with the old engine? If nothing, I would keep it and my money...

Just so you know, NADA puts the value of your old motor at $3,170, but they are always low. So 5 or 6 grand would probably be about right.

Check these out:

web page

I was thinking, the lower unit is getting old, it's in saltwater, there's some corrosion, if I wait till the very end, I'd have a new anchor, if I sell it now, I'll get a few dollars for it and have a nice reliable new engine. This is my first boat. I don't know how long the engine is suppose to last. I bought it used and blew the head the first year. They say I ran it without oil but I'm pretty sure I didn't, no alarm sounded, the oil tank was half full. Now I don't trust it. I'd like to take the boat offshore or at least 4 to six hours from home and overnight. I boat on the Long Island Sound and theres a lot of places to go. How long should it realistically last in saltwater? For all I know the new one will be just as tempermental.
