Im looking into getting a bigger engine if i can.. i have an 88 Spl johnson on there right now. weighs about 300lbs. the max hp for the boat is 150. i dont want to put alot of weight on the transom just cuz im anal about that stuff.

1. how much hp should i get for a 17ft 86' larson senza v-175
2. how much could i get for my ob now?

V4 140hp like I have is about 360lb if you are that worried about the weight. If you go up to a 6 cylinder then up goes the weight with it.
You are currently at 60% of your max HP which in my opinion is a little underpowered.

Your 88 SPL value ???
Depends on a lot of things. Condition, location, buyer being given a test run with it and many more with the biggest one being how many folk are looking for a motor that size. They are a great motor and very reliable but do some research before you come up with a realistic value.

as said, condition, location, what year is the 88. i have seen them from $500-2,000 depending on condition, and usage. they are fantastic motors.

its in great condition. im up in new england. ct. in the couple years that i owned it i never pushed it to the limit and never did dumb stuff with it .. i want my obs to last so i take good care of them.. we just had a lower end replaced.. ill get the year today

go with the 140 looper i kinda have the same prob now but its opposite of yours im running a 175 crossflow on my boat but want to lose some weight and go to the older 140 and make afew mods ,carbs reeds .intake work
and so on .the 88s are good motors but weigh the same as the 115 135 140

i decided to wait on the engine for a couple seasons. . but i had a slight vibration in it when i took it out the other day.. i got a hold of the guy who put the lower end in last year. and he said everything was fine when he put it in and that its most likely the prop . . hes a family friend and works with obs for a living not the kinda guy that would just say it so he doesnt wanna look at it lol. the prop isnt that bad of shape . so what could he mean
