How much does a Ford 5.0L weigh?

Hi,

I'm getting ready to pull the engine on a friends boat, a '91 OMC with the 5.0L Ford V-8. He has a significant leak that we can't find, like the bilge pump runs every couple of minutes.

I can't seem to find anyone with a big enough cherry picker, so I'm going to build a gantry lift and use a chain hoist to pull it. But, I've never really paid attention to the total weight before, so I'm not sure what size hoist to buy.

I'm assuming that a cross beam made of 2 or 3 (any opinions?) 2 x 8 bolted together would be sufficient.

3 of them will be plenty don't just bolt them together though use Glue and screws (makes for a much stronger beam than just bolting them together)

I have a 5.0 L Ford... I used 3 - 2x6's bolted together and a 1 ton chain hoist. The only problem I had is that the garage ceiling heighth wasn't high enough to clear the transom so I had to work around the engine sitting in the boat... Scroll down for a picture of the lift...

Just pulled my OMC 460 and it wieghs 750lb fully dressed. I also built an gantry and ussed 2@ 2x6x12' screwed together for the beam and 4x8x16' for the A frame uprights and 2@ 2x6x10' for angled uprights to beam lag bolted. and did wonderful. Even had issue with chain hoist skipping a tooth or 2 while lowering engine and really bounced and scared the Sh^$#*^ out of me. But beam held very nicely with no intigrity issues. HAd to build gantry high enough to clear 8 feet!!!! Boy what a job!
