I will keep pluggin along until I reach that point.

Actually .. you really need to address that from an Inside point of view NOW.

Before you start stringin and deckin' Fix the inside of the cut.

Get your outside repair on the 'cut' ready to go. Just in case you have some left over resin kickin off in a cup you can use that for the outside glass repair without having to mix up a seperate batch of resin. ( Or you can wait and tackle the outside repair later on its own )

Did your helper cut into the port side too ? ( from the pics it looks like the glass was cut..mebbe not all the way through..but cut .. I hope I am wrong ).

Also..You have a metal flake gel finish ( Im not sure if anyone else picked that up ) .. its not going to be as easy of a fix compared to a simple gel repair.

Not trying to stress you out or anything..but you might start researching 'metal flake gelcoat repair' here on Iboats. .. just to get an Idea of what is needed.

Again..the biggest issue that I see is that one side has a full cut through..the other side looks cut into..and its in the bow at the deck location. ( just slightly under the deck in fact ).

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

the reason i said dont worry about it now....is because that is exactly where the filling and tabbing for the deck will go.

that means.....he will be filling twice and tabbing twice....so why?

the gash is not large enough to cause a distortion from movement.....even if it is, i would do it when everything is out and the hull ground down.....that way he will not be worried about not grinding in an area, or worried about ruining his repair....

btw...i was not going to mention the flake.....
he might decide for a standard gell finish in that spot only.

the great thing about iboats,,,,,,is there are many ways ways to do do repairs.....and you get to hear all of them.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Yacht Dr., you and Oops! have made good points. Oops! you are right I really would like to keep every thing original if I can. This was a really good looking bass boat when I bought it many years ago, and I'm one that likes originality with a few improvements that noone will notice. I didn't take any shots of the cap yet, there are a few problem areas there as well. I had one of those guys who had a habbit of saying "Don't worry, what ever I break I can fix it."I guess you know what happened to him.:( that is why I changed the game and sought the help from people that really care about doing a job right the first time.:)
Thanks a Million guys.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi guys, does anyone have any suggestions on the construction of a cradle for my boat?

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hey BR, for me the two most important things sor a cradle are mobility and hull support. For mobility I recommend using the 8" pneumatic casters from Harbor Freight YOu an get four for around 50 bucks. I learned from my cradle that full length support of the hull is important so you want to use 2x6's to run the length of the underside of the hull just inside the chines. Pad them with carpet and either design them to pivot like i did or angle the supports to conform to the andgle of the hull. It's also important to take and record the internal measurements of the hull so that you can ensure the cap will fit back on. Here's a drawing of how i would do the cradle.

Thanks a lot WOG.

I will get started on this ASAP! In this area I can only get 2"x6" material in a max length of 14', will that be long enough to fabricate this cradle? The boat is 16' with a deep "V" at the bow.

You are a great help!

The support rails only need to be long enough toextend to where the V starts. I suspect 12' will be about right.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

So now what is the difference between a properly set boat on bunks compared to a 'cradle' ? .. 4" wheels ?

I still do not see any reason for making a custom gurney for the hull..

Happy boating :) ..

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hi YD,
I am soooo very new to this. I've read a lot of posts on rebuilds and the majority of them use cradles to keep the hull true. If I have a deflection in the hull and glass it, it will always be there and cause creepy things to happen. Long story short I really want to learn to do this the right way. For this is the reason with my decision for the "gurney".:)
Thanks
BR.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

The majority of rebuild done on cradles is for one of two reasons. 1.) You are going to be flipping the boat to work on the bottom of the hull or 2.) Your Trailer is a Roller style trailer. If your's is neither of these then YD is prolly correct. There is really no need to "Cradle" your boat.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks YDand WOG,
As I really am a novice in this, you guys are professionals and I salute you all. I was not doubting, I just want to follow the right path and learn from you. At this point I am like a sponge and I'm trying to take in as much as I can.I don't understand a lot of the reasons why things are done in the way they are done, so please forgive if I am incorrect on some issues I can and will accept being corrected.
The only way that I can learn from you guys is for you to steer me in the right direction when I get off course. Thanks for giving me direction. As with anything it will take time to learn the ropes, I'm all ears and willing to learn.:)
Thanks again guys,
BR.

Well....just so we're clear, YD IS a pro, as for me...just and avid boat guy that reads, researches, and studies a lot. Done some boat and fiberglass work in the past but for sure NOT a pro. Always willing to lend a hand when and where I think I have the ability too. Ultimately it's your boat and you are free to do as you see fit. It's always advisable to seek and gain the best advice possible and then use it and your skills to get the job done.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

p.s. cradle idea scrapped. I will go ahead and remove transom, battery boxes, and whats left of the stringers, then start grinding the hull. Thanks for the $ saving advise YD.
thanks again,

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Nothing to apologize for. I just wanted to make sure you knew I was not a pro. OOPS, YD and others are and their advice comes from years of experience in the business but that's not to say that the people here on the forum that have gone through the ordeal of restoring a boat don't have extremely good and valuable advice for you to learn from and follow.

Ok WOG,
Thanks. Now, I have a problem that I really need HELP with. I tried on my tyvek suit and it was terrible! I had a tough time trying to get it off. Is there anybody that make them in a larger size than XXX. I need it in at least a 5x. I'm a real BIG Boy.
