Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Ok WOG,
I looked at the Majic line of paint in Tractor Supply and I was not sure that it would give me the same results. I called Lowe's and they are checking with Valspar to see if it could be special ordered,O'Reilly's auto parts carry the Duplicolor self etching primer in spray cans,I haven't been to Walmart yet to see their paints. Tractor supply has a large selection of paint supplies in the Majic brand, if that will do the job I will pick up everything I need there.
Thanks,
BR

Yep the Majic Paint and Primer and Hardener will do the job just fine. Almost exactly the same paint as the Valspar paint.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hello WOG,
I got all of my paint supplies to paint my jon boat. I picked every thing up from Tractor Supply. I purchased a gallon of paint, a pint of reducer, hardner, and a ouart of primer per the advise of the sales rep. As you stated, I should be able to paint my boat for under 100 dollars, and my supplies were under 80. I also picked up an HVLP gun from harbor freight, item# 66222. this gun came with a 1.5mm tip. your post stated that you recommend a 1.2 - 1.4mm tip. I am going to use an oil-based enamel paint and primer. the paint manufacturer recommends a pint of reducer to a gallon of paint and to mix the primer with 10% mineral spirits for spraying. I would like to know what you recommend on this. I haven't had the opportunity to do anything except sand and wash the boat, it's been raining like crazy here with humidity levels running between 80 and 100% now they are forcasting a Hurricane to be in the area the first part of the week.
Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

BR, The link at bottom of my signature has all the info on how to mix the primer and the paint for spraying. Make sure to let the paint "Cook" for 30 mins. after adding the hardener. Also Only mix about 2 cups at a time. that will be enuf for one coat of paint. Once the hardener is added to the paint you have to use it within 8 hours or it will go bad. No hardener is added to the primer. Just follow the details in the link and you should be fine. Make sure the vent hole in the top of the cup is open on the spray gun. I bought 6 of the Plastic disposable cups for Cheap from HF. Makes is easy to clean up.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks WOG,
the main concern that I have is the tip size, you mentioned a 1.2-1.4mm tip and mine has a 1.5mm tip. Will this be alright?
Thanks,

Yep, You will need to practice a bit and learn what air pressure and paint volume you'll need. A bigger tip can cause issues with orange peel and fisheyes in the paint. I'd recommend cutting back on the volume and keeping the air pressure around 35-38 psi.

Thanks WOG,
I plan to practice on paper to get the fan and flow right before I start on the boat. I also intend to contact HF to see if they carry the smaller tips for that gun.
Thanks,

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Hey WOG,
I got to do a little work today, I got the self etching primer sprayed and a coat of metal primer sprayed. Now it's time to wait for the primer to dry before I can water sand the primer and tack with acetone and mineral spirits mixture. I finished around 7:00 pm. and I plan to get started after lunch tomorrow with the prep work and if the rain holds off I will shoot color Sunday. Any comments would be welcomed.
Thanks,
BR

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Use "WET" water when you sand. That's water with a bit of dish washing soap in it. for a cup of water one drop of soap. Gently stirred. Helps carry the paint particles away and keep the paper from clogging. When it comes time for shooting color, Keep the Paint volume low but high enough to cover, air pressure at the compressor @ 100 psi and at the gun approx 38psi. Full fan on the tip then back off till it starts to pull in then open up just a bit. Light coats. To heavy and you may end up with Orange peel. With the temps a bit cooler now, I'd use 1/3 cup acetone and 1/4 cup of Mineral Spirits and 1 cup of Paint. If you need to thin it more add a bit more MS. I'm bettin you'll do fine.;)

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Thanks Wood,
I will follow your advise, I ran a line pressure at 100psi and 40psi at the gun witn the trigger depressed also with the fan set at the max and backed off 1/4 turn and it shot the primer beautifully with no orange peel, I hope it does the same for the color. I noticed in the instructions connected to your link, you mentioned using scotch brite pads for water sanding, now in the last post you mentioned "paper", should I use 400 grain wet/dry paperinstead of scotch brite pads? just a little confused on the method, I am flexible, just point me in the direction and I will do my best.
Thanks,

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

I did not know what you were using. I DO recommend the Scotch Brite pads but still would use the WET water. The primer is Perfect for that 1.5mm tip. It has a lot of solids in it. The paint will be a bit thinner. You MIGHT try using a bit less thinner to make the paint a bit thicker and see how it shoots. If it atomizes ok then GREAT. If not add more to the mix till it starts to flow correctly. The KEY IMHO is getting it to atomize at the tip and mist properly. Takes some practice and some fidgeting but I'm sure you'll get it.

Re: how much fiberglass do I need?

Ok ,
I'll set the gun on cardboard before I start with the boat. I don't know what IMHO means, but I'll do everything I can to get it right, I have a gallon of paint to practice with.
Thanks,
BR

I have the reducer and the hardner for this paint, I was wandering what I actually need to mix for the color coats, the acetone, mineral spirits the reducer, or what? I try to understand the formula, but other stuff gets put into the equation and that it is confusing to me. If it is not too much trouble let's make this real simple for me I'm the rookie in the house and I want to be certain before I start.
Thanks,
