How Much for Link and Sync at the shop

I've heard here several times that a link and sync is a good place to start for many issues on 2 cycle outboard engines.

Question is, How much would that cost at a reputable shop assuming there isn't anything else wrong that needs parts.

After that, how often do you need to do that? Is it like a tuneup thing, or only when you are having problems?

what are the problems you are having? proper trouble shooting is the correct steps to take.

1988 90hp johnson starts/idles and trolls nice, during acceleration there is a little roughness right at the start of power up, just before the boat is on plane, then smooth as silk through the rest of the power band all the way to WOT.

I asked this question earlier and got a suggestion to do a link and sync. I bought the manual but it looks like it will take more time than I have. If it was around $100 I might pay someone to do it for me.

It should take only 10-15 minutes total on most engines. Rick

wow, really?

So I grew up with changing points and condensers on my cars so I pretty good with feeler gauges and timing lights, but the link and sync looked like a pretty in depth process.

I have the manufacturers manual. Maybe I'll give it another read and grow a pair and tackle it. The boat is still in storage so here's a good excuse to get it out early.

if you have the manual, do it yourself. but, if you skip a step, go back and start at the beginning.

also your carb has 6 jets in each carb. high speed, mid and low speed. the high and mids are in the bottom of the carb bowl, you could possibly be developing some blockage in the mid speed jets.

Carburetor service is not part of synchronization and linkage adjustment described in your factory manual, so if that is needed, scrap any time estimate. It will probably take you 15 minutes just to get the carburetors off and ready for service.

Synchronization and Linkage Adjustment is just one part of the broader Tune-Up Procedure described in your service manual.
