I am replacing the shift cable and bellows and gimball bearing.I have everything taken apart and bearing out.I shattered my homemade gimball driver that I made from pvc and dowling from plans posted here. The bearing was in about a third of the way and it was not straight. I used my slidehammer to remove it and emery papered every surface smooth again, but now I am stopped till I get this bearing to seat.Any suggestions?...Bob

Some people have luck putting them in the freezer overnight. If you have large sockets and and extension, you could use that to install the bearing

I took it out of the freezer to install it LOL .I will look for sockets...any other suggestions.Oh i did scar the face of the outer ring by using a small socket on the one side that was cockeyed before I yanked it out...is that serious?

If it spins freely you should be fine

I have used pipe and pipe fittings to install Bearings. You need one big enough to cover the outer race. Maybe take it with you to plumbing store to get a good fit

Bigger hammer gets the job done. Can't have too big a hammer...

i use a 48 oz. hammer to install gimbal bearings

they go in tough because they are supposed to seat and stay in place

I havnt done a Gimble bearing but can you pound the new one in with the old one ? And a piece of wood or sumtn for a driver? Its the same size.. I know when I have put new races in a hub for wheel bearings. I used the old race and a 2x4 and a B F H to seat the new one.

I used a large impact socket and an extension. had no problems buzzard went in with about 5 good hits with a ball pein hammer just make sure you line up the holes with the greese fitting otherwise you will not be able to grease the gimbel through out the season

i used some graphite powder, put it on a paper towel, and rubbed it on the OD of the bearing race and in the bore of the housing. didn't use too much as it will keep the bearing from seating flush if it gets behind the race.

I got it in finally ...bought a 2 lb hammer and a bearing driver and it took literally 30 secs to seat it ...it took me longer to pay for the tools than the time I used them...LOL...now onto the rest of the job thanks,Bob

;)Hope you used a bearing driver for a gimble bearing.. Otherwise you toasted a $40 part

I got mine in pretty easy with a little ol claw hammer.. Guess some are stubborn

It was a generic kit but I used the driver that fit the outside of the bearing ...it was a steel cup ...and had no contact with the center area...In Canada that is more like a 90 dollar part ,even tho today our dollar is at par ..LOL..It is expensive to have fun here ..regards,Bob:)

The right tools ALLWAYS make the job easier and faster!

One good tool will out last 3 cheap ones!

Happy hammering!

On those kind of jobs I prefer to use copper or lead mallets.

You get the energy where you want it, in the direction of travel.
A steel hammer, half the energy goes into bouncing the hammer back again!
