The scenario that I like to see for these types of crossings is meticulous planning, some sort of check on the boats to make sure all is well mechanically, a thorough weather check in the period leading up to the trip and right before the trip - including getting strong forecast advice - and multiple boats making the passage together.
Having an adventure isn't the problem - its the failure to understand and adequately prepare for "disaster" that gets folks in trouble.
