I have a project boat with no motor that was originally an I/O, I am considering an outboard conversion, the boat is a 1969 allmand 25, it weighs in at close to 4,000lbs. with I/O installed, what would be a good outboard combo for this? i will be using the boat for cruising & trolling, any input would be great, thanks

If it were mine, I'd want a pair of O/Bs on the back.
Somewhere around 150hp each give or take.
Depends on how fast you wanna go and what work the transom might need to hold them. The weight hanging off is going to be another issue.

you will have to use a motor bracket attached to the stern, pair of 150's-200's

thanks guys, that it was i had in mind, my transom is close to 2" thick, i can make my own bracket similar to those made by armstrong, gil, seamount. will my transom be strong enough? should I add more strength to the inside, like a plate or something?

Not necessary to use huge amounts of plating in there! Some 1/4 by 4 inch stainless plates on the bracket mounting bolts should spread the load nicely. Nice thing, with 1/4 thick plates, you can tap to the bolt size and with a couple of holes in the plate corners, bolt it to the inside of the transom. Now, you don't need someone inside to hold the nut. After you tighten all the bracket mounting screws from outside, you can go inside and use self locking nuts for safety. With the size engines you are contemplating I would use at least four 1/2 bolts on each engine side of a (single) twin engine bracket. If using two separate brackets, at least six bolts on each bracket.

Since your boat does not have a splashwell to reinforce the transom, I would also consider some knee braces from transom to stringers. Probably not necessary as the original I/O did not have them, but a little insurance could not hurt.

knee braces good idea, as the i/o put the force on the stringers, and transom. all stainless hardware, and seal with 3M 4200.
