How do you know when it's time for a new block? Will the engine start over heating.... or will worse happen?

It's easy to tell when it's time for new exhaust manifolds.

I have seen blocks that are run in salt water with way over 1000 hours. You have anything close to that?

No, but the thermostat cover looks like its insides had been sitting under the ocean for about 1000 days. Fortunately, the block doesn't look near as bad.

That's normal for those to get that way.

What happens to a salt water block with 2000 hours? (Assuming the engine isn't tired by then)

LOL. i have a engine is so rusted it overheat.. thats the boat that iam working on rigth now..

the first thing i did was remove the intake manifold. and then purchase CLR. that will remove rust. put inside the passage where the water goes to cooled off the engine.. let it rest for a while and then clean it with a long brush wire that dont break so it dont get stuck in the engine..

My Engine was so ruster it was rusted from the inside. so rusted i have to buy 2 sets of Riser...

and purchase a Drill and a Metal Brush to help remove them...

Also Replace your OUtdrive Pump.. AND CHECK YOUR eNGINE WATER PUMP ..

CHECK ALL THIS AND YOUR ENGINE COULD WORK..

I ASSUME YOUR engine still running...
