How much less is a rental car worth...

OK, so I bought a used car here last March. It's the law here that a dealer disclose in writing (via a checkbox on the sales contract) if the car was previously a rental car or taxi.
He didn't. I even asked. he boldfaced lied. The box is not checked.
I found out today it WAS a rental car for the first 15,000 miles of it's life (that was the mlg. when I bought it).
How much % wise, would you say a mid size 1 year old, 4 door sedan would be worth at the time i purchased, knowing it was a rental vs. not a rental?

nothing, 5%, 10%, 50%...

I'm asking, because the motor vehicle dealer's association will mediate on my behalf for free... I just want to know how much to realistically ask for from the dealer.
I am now selling the car and i will disclose the details to the next owner so the savings will be passed on.
No issues with the car - it runs great- I have put another 15,000 miles trouble free.

I wouldn't pay more than 50% of normal value for a rental. You know how people drive those things. I imagine the maintainece isn't very good either, and the oil changes during the first 15,000 are some of the most critical...

My penny pinching bro has driven previously Hertz cars for years only because he gets them cheaper.

They have proven as reliable as privately owned cars. . . .probably got better maintenance though you wouldn't expect they got driven carefully.

He generally pays about 25% below the book retail.

Like they say, " nothing partys like a rental!"
I dont expect the value to be to much lower, and the rentals are maintained pretty good. Its just who rented it, and how they drove it.

If it wasn't for rental cars, I'd never have learned just how high you can fly them off the top of a hill, that there's a speed governor at 115 MPH on most cars, and that putting the transmission into reverse at 50 MPH can be done exactly 11 times before it shows serious signs of distress.

Plus, if you throw a front wheel drive car into reverse in the snow at maybe 35 or 40 mph and floor it, you get a pair of impressive rooster tails of snow powder spraying a good 20-30 feet in front of the car as it's moving forward, very interesting looking to a bystander I must say. :)

I had a rental for a month and a half when I totaled my Jeep. It was almost new, I had it from 3,000 to 6,000 miles. It was during some freak ice and snow storms, so every morning when I started it I'd rev it to the limiter in neutral (3000 RPMs) until it warmed up and the ice melted. :D I wouldn't buy a car that was broken in like that. Most rentals probably are. Probably still had the factory oil at 6k too.

I would get my money back from the dealer as I rent cars all the time for work travel.
Those cars are beat to hell.

You can always look at this way. The rental was most likely driven hard so if it was gonna break it probably already did. The price reduction will depend on the make and model. A Chevy or Ford will have a much bigger price cut then a Nisson, Honda or Toyota.

There's no steadfast rule. Some get beat, some don't. You can usually tell if one's been mistreated. Another point as stated, much like our gov't vehicles, these units get serviced regularly and repaired as needed. So generally speaking they're in decent running order. My guess would be they should be 30% or so under non-rental value. Don't forget, a rental company gets a 'fleet' price when they buy these things which means they paid a bit more than half of what they sat on the lot for new.

You have more of a case since the dealer was deceptive, you might be able to demand a non-rental equivalent vehicle.

can you compare some similar cars that are for sale now as used vs. some that were previously rentals? hard numbers from the marketplace are hard to deny.

or, try to throw some math at them. maybe something along the lines of you can expect 100k miles out of this thing and 15% of those miles were from rental use. since renters treat the cars like crap, that's really like 30k miles which is almost a 1/3 of the useful miles. you'd therefore like 1/3 of the purchase price back.

Hystat, try finding a rental car for sale outlet (Hertz, Avis, etc), look at their pricing and compare them to Kelly Blue Book retail used car prices. That will certainly tell you what the difference might be if any.

I think many companies send their cycled autos to the auction because I know a lot of Brand dealers have used rental cars on their lots. My wife has purchaced two of them from Ford Dealers. Both still had factory warranties and she had no problems with either. They were straight and clean and had reasonable accessories on them. I did not pay attention to how much she paid.

Sounds like your 'rental' car was not fresh out of the fleet when you bought it. Second generation per se. It will be interesting to see if the dealer has any obligation to disclose a source if the car did not have a branded title.

Keep us posted.

Bad person to ask But here's my 2 cents I always buy at auctions and rental are out of the question for me they are always overpriced compared to auctions. Bottom line is if your happy and paid less than than dealer sticker good for you enjoy!!

Re: How much less is a rental car worth...

Thanks to the people that understood what i was after :) thank you too, the rest of you, for helping me understand the limited market for rental cars and general public perception - it helps my case.

25% of my purchase price back, or the option to buy the car back from me right now at it's current retail value (autotrader average as if it was never a rental) is what I have proposed to the dealer and the mediator. If they refuse it will go to small claims court - where it should be hands down. As long as the judge understands my case. i'll have to explain myself there better than here... working on it...

of course my second option really is encouraging the dealer to sell the car again without disclosure... but I think it would be the best deal for both of us.

Re: How much less is a rental car worth...

Yer very right about the "public perception" of rental cars part. And many of the comments from people here back that up. So based on that alone, and an apparent disclosure law in Canada, there's probably some reduction in value.

Frankly, a nearly brand new car that was used for only 15,000 miles as a rental is probably in just as good or even better mechanical condition as a privately owned or off-lease vehicle with the same mileage. As has been said, rental cars get regular scheduled maintenance and car washes. And private cars (once we get past the excessive maintenance freaks like myself that frequent this boat site), often do NOT. And don't forget that at 15,000 miles, how much maintenance does a new car really need? NOTHING except for a pair of oil changes and maybe a tire rotation or two. Even if those were missed (highly unlikely) no real harm would be done.

As for abusive driving? Some renters I'm sure will abuse the cars, but most are business or family vacation travellers, or temporary replacements for wrecked cars being fixed...and will drive them no differently than their own....and because of vacation/business use they're more likely to have highway miles than local city miles like many privately owned cars, which is far less wearing.

My take? If you can get some money for free and don't mind a few hassles, meetings, & court dates, keep messing with the legal system and maybe you can add to your bank account a bit and it would be justified from a legal standpoint.

But I think you got a good car that is no different than if it had been owned by a private party.

You being in Canada makes my legal knowledge useless as I'm in the States. Here there are no "rental disclosure" laws or checkboxes...it's all just buyer beware over here. But bottome line, I'd be more than willing to buy a 15,000 mile rental car with full confidence in its mechanical condition.
