How much lower gear case lube

Hi gents, I am replacing my lower gear case on a evinrude 83' 15 hp and I would like to know how much gear case lube to put in and since the lower unit is currently detached from the rest of the outboard is it ok just to pour it in the gear rod hole because the gear rod and water pump have not been put back in yet? Thanks guys

Re fill it only when you get back on the motor. Thats the only way to get it completly full. Fill from bottom with both drain and fill holes open when full put fill plug in top and then the bottom plug.
