I have a 1996 70hp evinrude. about how much oil do I need to change the lower unit? I have 32oz of quicksilver and a pump attachment. Walmart only had the one bottle and I bought it. Now I am afraid that I'll start the process only to realize that I'm short on oil.

thanks in advance

it is enough, I am not sure exactly how many ounces, but you will have some left over, fill it until the top plug begins to overflow. then put in top plug screw, then disconnect hose and quickly put in bottom plug screw. make sure your plug screw gaskets are in good shape, you can make your own if you need to from a small piece of rubber, or a thin o-ring.

Thanks, I wasa wondering about the washers. the problem I have is that there is not a boat dealer nearby. there is one about 45 minutes away. I'll probably wait to change it until I get some washers. the last thing i want to do is be cheap and mess some thing up by not replacing them as well. I just getting cabin fever for spring fishing!!!!:D

It is recommended that new washers are always used . (Have to confess though that mine are original ... 1984! and not leaked ... yet)

Natural rubber is not a suitable material.
O rings should only be used if O rings were fitted originally. The screws have a recess for the O ring under the heads if they are intended to have O rings.
As far as i can tell that motor should have flat nylon washers on the fill and level screws.
