Currently, i own a 14' Lund SSV with a 20hp Yamaha. The boat has been just great but the motor is getting tired. I'm considering buying a new motor and was wondering if anyone had advice on HP and brands? Should i be buying a bigger motor? Electric start would be nice. Is 30HP - 50HP an option? Any advice would be appreciated.

If ya can afford it, go with the most HP the boat can handle. Try to stay within the capacity plate limit even though these Lunds are way overbuilt and could handle it. But, a 5 or 6 will make it go if that is all ya can afford. My 12 footer gets pushed with a 4 as we got a he!! of a deal on it. Pushes us close to 5 mph with dad(225#) and me (135#).

I have a Lund SSV 14.. I have a 25 Mercury on the boat, and with three adults it powers up very nicely. I have the drop in floors too, which add weight. Mercury, Yamaha, and Honda make a nice quiet four stroke...

I had that same boat before going bigger and had a 25 hp merc which was maxed out for Canadian regs. It is rated for a 35 hp if you check the back. I wouldnt put a 50 hp as its not built to handle the power which could lead to failure and loss of insurance if you have any.

Cheers!!

Checking my Lund brochure, that SSV-14 is rated for up to 35 HP motor. I
would venture to say that either Mercury or Honda's 30 hp four strokes
would power it very nicely.
