posted April 15, 2002 04:36 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At last i got the time to disassemble my 1984 35Hp Evinrude.

I did not find the lost reedleaf, nor fragments, it must have passed. But my < 50Hrs new powerhead, just broken in, got some small scores. There are two just above one intakeport, the cyl that lost the leaf. They are visible 1/2" beyond porthole, and feelable with fingertip 1/3" - 1/6" from hole. Compression was not affected. The other cylinder has one, at a ringend, but it is only visible, not feelable. Should I leave them alone, or try to borrow a honingtool ? Wil honing these small scores away not cost me as much compression as letting them stay. I could not mesure any loss !

leave them alone (as long as they don't protrude) :)

Scuffing of the cylinder wall and very small scoring can be normal for some engines.

Honing can take care of the scuffing and and possibly blend in the scoring. But any significant scoring means replacement of piston and rings, and a bore job. Sounds like yours is still ok.
