Re: How much should I offer for this boat?

I can pull the LU no problem but is a prop shaft on one of these little yamahas difficult to change? Special tools? I'm a handy guy but I've learned some things are just easier (and eventually cheaper) to have done at a shop.

I've never changed a prop shaft but AFAIK you would need some special tools to get the LU apart and possibly special setup tools for putting it back together with the new shaft..... My first thought is that it MIGHT be cheaper and easier to source a used LU... If I decided to go that route I might try (knowing it's the wrong thing to do) to straighten the shaft without removing it.

This would be a question to ask in the proper engine section for better responses.

Looks good for 750, 500 is a great deal. If all the framing is alum so it should be a easy and fun resto.

$500 and then I wouldn"t "restore" it like he had it; just gut it, add two seats and a small bow deck, and keep a basic open jon boat.

If this is an early Bass Tracker as I suspect then that hull was bult/designed with the front and rear casting decks as part of the structure. Would be like removing the middle seat from an aluminum row boat.

I think further info on the manufacturer is in order before making that kind of recommendation.

$500 is a fair price albeit a little on the high side since you will have to rebuild the innards as well as the transom. You should be able to buy something like this with a 50 to 70 on it for under $2,000. I had a similar Bass Tracker, if not the same model, with a 70 on it and it flew as well as handled very well. Here's an example or something like this.

Just sayin there are options if you don't want to tear things up.

I live on the coast so maybe the prices are a little higher here but something comparable (but not needing work) with a running 50-70hp would be 4,000+ Prices are usually lowest this time of the year and they're still way up there.

yup. dunno where "the coast" is but you are probably correct. any 17 footer listed for around $2000 or less goes really fast. at $4000 they sit a while. it's a matter of timing and luck.

All the boats I see around here like that go for near 4k also. A deal like that might pop up here and there but its rare.

Well,,, last December I put a 2004 17' McKee Backwater with a 90 Yamaha 2 stroke and aluminum trailer up for $6800. The boat was located on the NC coast. 1st call asked me to hold until 10 AM and promised $500 for holding if he did not take it. He drove from near Atlanta overnight and handed me the cash as soon as the motor turned over. Great boat in great shape and they sell quickly at a fair price.

Well...captain... The 90 -- being a Yamaha -- will sell for about $4000. Add and aluminum trailer and the fact that it's a McKee you should have asked for more. No wonder the guy was in a rush. A typical 2001 McKee Backwater 172 CC with a 2002 Yamaha 90 HP sells for about $8000. Doesn't McKee have a lifetime warranty on the hull? I am not saying ALL 17' can be bought for $2000 but there are many that can and some are a really good deal but you have to shop and have patience.
