Hello All,

I am considering purchasing a boat with a 2000 50 HP Johnson, and the current owner recommends that I rebuild the carbs. Is it worth paying someone to do it? Does anyone know how much it should cost? I have not rebuild a carburetor for about 17 years, is it worth trying to DIY this project? Thanks

Regards

It's an easy job if you have a little mechanical aptitude and are meticulous about it being clean before re-assembly.

I took three 1988 evinrude 70 hp carbs to the mechanic and asked him to rebuild them..

he charged me $50 and gave me back all the parts he replaced!!! and gaskets to reinstall the carbs onto the power head.

bob, he was hurting for money, the carb kits cost more than that. most shops charge $80-100 per hour labor, plus parts.

2000 50 carbs are not rocket science. read carb cleaning in the TOP SECRET FILE, 1st thread in this forum. the example is very close to your carb. you do need the special tool $20.00.

I hope he did a good job..

he might have had the parts in the shop for a long time..he has an OLD OLD shop, full of all kinds of stuff, crammed to the ways...he is always super busy.

if there a short cut carb rebuild??? maybe he gave me the short cut rebuild...

sometimes he just gives me stuff.... like when i go in and get work done then I look around for used stuff i need..like he gave me a TNT relay box with all the wires and relays for that 70 hp....

I bet he had the kit for 15 years in the back somewere..

maybe i am HOPING that!! ha ha ha

most carb jobs around here cost $200-400 depending on how many carbs you have. Usually $300-350 for a 6 cylinder and $200-250 for 2 or 3 cylinders

remember i said i took the carbs in hand to the guy...NOT the motor.

they were already taken off the motor!!!! bet there is more work removing and replacing those carbs and getting them synched, than the rebuild itself!

you are correct on most motors. also remember you are paying for knowledge and training.

Re: How much should it cost to rebuild a Carb

once again, I can't thank you guys enough for all the input, I took a look at the thread in top secrets and I think that I can handle it. I have the book for his engine, he let me look at it this week so I think I will move forward and purchase the boat, The hull and electronics are in great condition and my GPS fits in his GPS holder. he has the rebuild kits and new reeds for the motor (but hasn't done it himself yet), worse case scenario, I mess up and end up paying a boat mech. anyway.

Thanks again,

Regards
