how much slop

I am going to be looking at my lower unit for a few seals that may need to be replaced but i was wondering how much play should there be at the prop. not side to side but out it would move out about 1/4 inch I really cannot go tighter since I have to back off the nut to get the cotter pin in. thanks

You didn't say what motor we are working on, but splined shaft, right? There are supposed to be a thrust washer forward of the prop and another one aft of the prop. Betcha one of them is missing (?). Like the aft one. It's about 1/4" thick.
