How much smoke is normal when engen is at an idle, mime seems to smoke a little more than i would like it to, is there any thing i can do to lessen it, i have 125-4cyl. Is it possible to back off on low idle screws ?, have cleaned carbs, also am using walmart brand 2 cyl oil, is that bad or does it make a difference

Re: How much smoke

You need just enough smoke (which you may not like but gotta have) but not too much.:D

Wal Mart Super Tech TC-W3 oil is a good petroleum based oil. It will smoke more than the more expensive synthetic oils, but no more than other petro oils.

In a test tank or with the boat stationary you will see more smoke, but that is normal.

I use Quicksilver brand, synthetic blend 2-cycle outboard oil. Make sure your mixing it 50:1. Are you adding anything else into your fuel? Sta-bil ethanol treatment is a good idea if you are gas with ethanol in it. I get moderate smoke on a cold start. But when your cruising along you won't even notice it.

About you idle screw, Too low-you'll stall out when putting it in gear. I don't have the numbers but I think you keep you rpms around 1000 at neutral idle and 750 in gear idle. Hope this helps.

Re: How much smoke

Synthetic oils smoke less. Not enough to make up for the cost$$$$.
Once you start screwing with the screws your gonna be buying a new powerhead.
The air screws should be set and never touched unless you doing a final adjustment.
Some say turning in a 1/4 turn or out a bit more will only end up costing you $$$$
Motor warm,in gear idle should be 750-800.Idle is adjusted with the towershaft. Not the screws on the carb.
Screws on the carb, start with 1 turn out from bottom.
Start motor and warm up.Then turn screw in till it coughs, bucks or stalls then out 1/2 turn.
Do the same for the other. That's how the factory says do it.
Like I said some guys have a different way of doing it and it can cost you the powerhead.
I have spark checkers and a compression tester.I routinely do a compression test on my motors.
