How much thrust?

I have a 17' Bass Tracker (Aluminum) that currently has a 28lb thrust motorguide on it. It obviously won't be enough for me on the rivers I want to fish around here. It is ALMOST "acceptable" on an open lake. I have been looking at the Motorguide FW54 FB that has 54lbs of thrust. Does this sound like enough power to handle a light to medium current? I really don't want to have to find a place for a third battery to run 24 volt. What's everyones opinion on this?

A 54lb motor will do it but I would go with a Minnkota. They are quieter and more reliable. And that is from experience.

Ok...That is good to hear. I wasn't sure how I was going to shoe horn another battery in there (I guess I could always move the trolling motor batteries to the front) if I had to go with 24 volt to get what I wanted.

My dad has had the same minn kota for years with no problems, I was just under the impression that their quality had come down some over the years. Will a minn kota be a pretty straight forward swap if the right model is purchased? I don't know if the plug for the foot control, etc. is standard or brand specific.

Anyone else? Not that I don't trust you bhile, but it is kind of a subjective question, so I was looking to see if "everyone's" opinion was the same?

I think 54/55 pounds should be fine.

The plug for the foot control is standard. Most units come with a new foot control standard.
