How much am I looking at to pave my 25x20 driveway? I just put down 5 pickup truck loads of 1 1/4 gravel (thats what they called it) to level it all out and have a slight pitch towards the street.

I would love a paved driveway, any idea the cost? I am in Maine, but would like some thoughts as to what you guys think it will cost me. Thanks!

Re: how much to pave my 25x20' driveway?

I just had my driveway paved (Remove concrete and replace with asphalt) 10' X 60' and it costs me $1500.00. Since yours is just a pave job, it should be no more than $1000.00, if that, depending on the price of material in your neck of the woods... Other bids that I had did go as high as double that for only a lay over... Shop around is the best advice...And ask them how much asphalt they are planning on using(Depth) and make sure the base is compacted thoroughly....

Thanks for the advice, my plan was to rent a compactor to make sure everything was set and ready to go, I want to get out of this as cheap as I can, as I cant afford to spend much due to other home projects. If it comes down to it I will end up with crushed stone, but thats not really snow removal friendly :( thanks again.

I'm all for doing whatever I can myself, especially when it means saving a buck but you might want to have the paving company do the prep. That way if there's settling or some other problem down the line there's no argument about the base material or it's prep being the reason. We both know you'll do it right, but it makes for a convenient explanation in the event there is a problem later on and I don't know that you'll save all that much.

I wonder if most paving companies will even agree to pave over a surface they haven't prepared? I've never contracted this kind of work so take it for what it's worth.

How thick do you want the AC? 2"-3" will work for light traffic and loading, 4" is better. Multiply depth as % of a ft. x L x W = cu. ft. 27 cu. ft. = 1 cu. yd. Approximately 1.8 tons +- of asphalt per cubic yard. Have fun.

Not sure on the thickness, I would be willing to go without any warranty to be honest. I just need a paved surface and dont have the coin to really do it, but its one of those things thats gotta get done.

Guess I need some other advice as well, cut down a tree in the middle of the drive last year:

Stump is flush with the ground, any issues?
Don't know what your trees are like, but putting a seal coat over a stump is a big no-no here. If the stump rots, which i guess it would do, you have a cavity, then a collapse, which you will fill and seal, then as more tree rots, so you will be filling and sealing. Could be endless, till you have filled the complete cubic area the stump and its roots occupy now.
Get it out, backfill and compact as you go, then you may still have a future problem if it sinks again.
Maybe some one else has a solution
Cheers
Phillip

You ever thought about taking crush and run wetting it down and compacting it?it can become like concrete.

You might consider pouring it yourself in concrete. I haven't priced concrete in a while, but you are looking at approx 6 yards, and at $140 a yard or so, that's still less than $1000

Get yourself a couple friends, hopefully one that has at least a little experience with it, invest in a 24 pak of beer, a few sub sandwiches in the cooler, and a dozen decent 2x4's, and voila, no big deal.

Mind you I have not priced redi-mix lately, but it might be an option.

Thanks guys, im leaning towards concrete doing it myself, or just putting crushed stone down, I just worry about snow removal.

just over 4 yards of concrete to pour it 6 inches thick which with wire mesh and rebar should be plenty strong for many years to come. 140$ bucks a yard for concrete??? thats damn spendy unless the cement plant is more then 15 minutes away (or maybe its that much in your part of the country)

My driveway (400 ft long) is crushed rock and I have no issues with snow removal, you just need to pack down the first snowfall or two before you start snowblowing or plowing and set the shoes to keep the blade/snowblower off the ground about 1/2"
