how much trouble is pulling flywheel

i would like to look at my points on a 76 9.9 evinrude. i think i need a puller. is this something simple or could mess this up.

Its as simple as you make it, sounds like you have a good idea of what to do, there are a few special tools that come in handy for this, like a flywheel holder, IMO, I do not like hitting the puller with a hammer,remember thats the crank your beating on. Some service manuals say not to use an impact hammer wrench, " i believe there all wet on this one, I have been doing it for over 20 years, if you have good puller bolts & a solid puller give it a few burps with a good impact & off it will pop. <br /><br />Good luck!!!!!!

don't mean to be a spoiled sport, but pulling a flywheel can be a pain if you don't have the proper tools. Even breaking the nut free can be difficult in some cases. And once you have the flywheel off, it has to be replaced with some care -- must fit over the key properly, and be torqued properly. I'm just suggesting it can be frustrating for an amateur (like me). So, are you sure the points need to be serviced?

It is not that hard. Easy if you have the fly wheel puller. First take the 7/8 nut off the center of flywheel. Engine will turn before nut will loosen. If you have a air inpact wrench it is easy but you can do it with out. Might want to pull spark plug wires just to make sure motor does not start if it turns. Put 7/8 wrench on nut in center of Flywheel and give a sharp tap on wrench with a hammer. May want to mark nut and flywheel with a marker so you can tell when it starts to turn. Once you get it loose, loosen it several turns but do not take it off. Next if you have puller screw in in three holes on top of flywheel and tighten center screw untill it pops off. I made a puller with a heavy peice of metal. See three holes near center of flywheel take a peice of metal and drill a whole to line up with each of those holes then find three bolts that will screw into thoes holes. Put a nut on each bolt then put in thru your metal plate and screw all the way into each hole. then tighten the three nuts until it pops off. Last way, the way I did it before I made a puller is put a couple big screw driver under flywheel where you have a heavy peice to pry up on flywheel and if necessary tap on flywheel 7/8 in nut on top while have pressure on it. Bad thing about this way is first putting pressure on bearing when apply pressure with screw driver then when hit with hammer force it other way, but I did it several times with no damage. Make sure you leave flywheel nut on as this is a tapered shaft and when pops loose can fly off motor and fall to the ground. Once you get it off will find two sets of points and condenser and a charge coil. Later models were different. Also note half round keyway to align flywheel. If it is damage get a new one as must be lined up to have correct timing. Point gap is set to .020 on highest part of lobe. Mine is marked on plate. Good luck.
