I have a 1996 Merc 9.9hp 2 stroke. How much water should be coming out of the telltale tube at idle? How about w.o.t.? It just dribbles at idle now and the water is very warm. Is this normal?

Have you noticed change in the amount of flow ? or has it always been like that?
When was the impeller last replaced ? Is the water hot to touch or just warm after 5 minutes running ?

I bought it used but was in a dealers showroom. Supposed to been never used. It did look that way when i got it. It was a remote control unit and didn't seem to be run ever. Could the impeller be dried out after sitting for 8 years? The water warms up after the motor has run awhile. When you open up the throttle the flow increases but seems lacking.

Re: How Much water?

The life of a rubber impeller is only about 4 years and most iboaters will advise changing it every second season.
The reasons are that it becomes brittle and breaks up leaving bits of rubber in the cooling system and removal of the Lower unit is necessary every few seasons to ensure it does not corrode to the crankshaft. If it's been there for 8 years, change it now. If the water is uncomfortable to touch., it's too hot and is not getting to the top cylinder and will cook your motor.

Some of these engines will only show a 'telltale' when the thermostat is open. Mercury only ran with that system for a couple of years because people complained about it. They then went back to a 'constant' telltale.

Chris..........

It does seem that it increases and then slows down. I have been told that the t-stat does that. I just wanted to know if it could be the impeller. I am planning on checking it.

Re: How Much water?

With the engine running you should be able to put your hand on the exhaust cover and it should be relatively cool. If it is then it's pumping water. If my memory is correct, the ignition pack and coils are mounted on the cover, so watch out for bities!

Chris......
