Re: How often do you Repack your Wheel Bearings?

I just got my boat this year and the trailer has BB's. I have added grease twice so far this season and today I saw water seep out of one side when I greased. I am glad I saw this thread because it just reaffirmed that i need to pull the bearings and replace them so I know they are good.

I just waited 6 hours last night for a flatbed trailer to bring my rig home due to a blown bearing. grease them EVERY year... at least.

I greased mine last year or the year before and apparently that wasnt enough.

I greased all mine about 5 years ago with aquashield and haven't had any issues. I haul my boat/s daily. Between 4 trailers, they average about 15,000 or more a year.

With BB's every other year I pull them out for a manual repack and inspection.
I will be changing all spindles/hubs to oil bath next time they need bearings.

Re: How often do you Repack your Wheel Bearings?

I'm going through the repacking/replacing of my 4 wheels on my tandem. I run BB's and have often had a concern about greasing the "inner" bearings up against the seal. I'm not really sure that the grease will get to the inner bearing and up against the inner seal..... How would you pack that bearing and inner seal prior to sliding on the axel? I'm thinking to fill that sucker so full of grease before sliding on that there's no way salt water can slip past an inner seal...... Ideas? thanks

Every time I put the trailer in the water to launch the boat I put about 2 shots of marine grease in each zerk fitting on the BB/spindle. It forces out any water that may have seeped into bearing area and there are no problems at all. It's as simple as that. Good Luck!

If you contiue to do that, you will force grease out the rear seal. If you have brakes, you will gum up your brakes. With Bearing Buddies, you put grease in until you see the piston just start to move.

The bearing buddy has nothing to do with greasing any bearings. That is what you do when you handpack your bearings. The purpose of the Bearing Buddy is to keep a slight positive pressure in the hub to keep water out. It does nothing to force grease into bearings.

So, does that slight positve pressure also slightly pressurize the rear seal?

Re: How often do you Repack your Wheel Bearings?

My trailer has the Accu-Lube zerk in the center of the spindle, when I pump grease in through the bearings then the excess comes back out in my direction, I wipe it off and replace the rubber grease cap. I'm confident that the grease is going through the bearings and forces any water back out. So far, it's working like a charm and I've never had to "repack" bearings or anything like that. I believe this is some different than the spring-loaded bearing buddies. Good Luck!

Not sure if its very good to be giving advice to shoot two pumps of grease into a zerk fitting every outing when the OP is talking about Bearing Buddys and not the system you have.
