All the time. But im on the ocean and it can turn quick. Thinking of getting the co2 inflatables for the family for comfort.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

Interesting answers. I also identified with Tommys thoughts because I used to both sail and powerboat too. I always wore my PFD when sailing but didn't always do so in the powerboat. On the sailboat, especially when racing, I just felt like I was moving around on deck too much to ignore the possibility of going overboard.

I haven't sailed in years, so that aspect of my boating is no longer a factor. But, I do wear the vest almost all of the time, with the exception of times when the boat is not underway. I think I started doing this because, even though I have been a good swimmer since about the age of five, I realize that I am getting older and don't have the stamina that I once had. Louisiana gets extremely hot in the summer months so, yes, the PFD is uncomfortable at times. What I have come to learn about that, however, is that it isn't so bad when the boat is moving, so I just put it on for safety.

Another thing that has influenced my thinking about PFDs is having become a somewhat regular volunteer in SAR missions for both the USCG and our local Wildlife & Fisheries Dept. Simply put, when the people that we are looking for are found to be still alive, they almost always had a PFD on at the time of the accident or problem. When we find them dead, they almost always did not have the PFD on. That's a pretty sobering circumstance in my book. It is also enough to make me ignore any sense of discomfort involved in wearing a PFD.

Somebody listed cost as a reason they did not own a suspender pfd. I really have too think about that one.
I look at it this way a very goood PFD about 200.00 + dollars

I am a typical hipocrit on this subject. I make my daughter and her friends wear them, however I haven't put one one since a suprise storm a few years ago.

Foul weather is about the only reason I put one on. I do however religiously use my kill switch lanyard after watching a guy cut a hard turn and get tossed from the boat and it took off and hit two girls on a small sailboat. They didn't get hurt bad thank God. But, man what a mess. His boat finally ran aground and chewed the prop all to hell before a on looker reached in and killed the engine.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I've boated in rivers, lakes, and the intercoastal waterway in my 18ft sea ray. Only time I've worn a life jacket on any of those is when doing water sports. I just warn people not to do anything stupid in the boat ahead of time.. if they do they will never be going out with us again.

I think a kill-switch lanyard would be a good idea, but my boat is far too old to have one and I doubt I will ever get around to installing one.

My rule is that if you expect to be on/in my boat, you will wear a PFD 100% of the time. If you choose to not wear one, you choose to watch from the dock.

I make my kids wear one every time we're on the boat, how could I not set the same example for them? Besides...how many news stories are there a year of someone drowning because they hit something, or were hit by another boat and drown...its not so much my driving, but the 100 other boats on the lakes that are drunk boating and don't see me.

My boat is also lanyard-less, and while I think a kill switch is a good idea in many instances, it is also a PITA in many other instances.
I would install one for the conditions that would make it a wise decision, however the law states that if you have one, you WILL have it attached regardless of conditions and/or circumstances.

For me, this restriction makes the lanyard an unattractive option.

As for the life vests, when operating at high speeds, or in rough water, I wear them. Just putting on calm water, I don't.

The law also requires that anybody on any sort of toys being pulled by the boat must wear a life vest. This I can agree with and readily comply.

When I am making a run in a high speed bass rocket, I wear one. Take it off to fish. Pretty easy pattern. Leave the vest on the seat, and as you climb off the stern deck, put it on as you sit down. Sometimes in real cold weather, I will wear it all day.

When I am in smaller, slower boats, or if we are doing lake conservation projects, where we have chainsaws, or whatever else on the bow decks of these bass rockets, making short slower runs, I work with the situation, which usually means have it on the deck near my feet. Unlike a lot of people, the only time mine goes into the hatches is when the boat goes on the trailer. I see, and fish with a lot of people who leave their PFD tucked away in a hatch.

I checked no and I never go out alone on the water as it's just me and the Mrs who go out on the boat. I do keep the orange uglies within arms reach though and I'm planning on buying two inflatable fanny pack preservers for us. I do believe you should have one on and all children should always have a properly sized vest on.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I did not vote as what I do is not listed. I boat small lakes and rivers.
If I am alone I should be wearing it all the time.
Kids wear it while underway. For swimming it depends on the child but either they are wearing it or holding it.
If I am with another capable adult I only wear it underway.

While underway I believe everyone should wear their pfds. Mine is always in my seat so I dont forget to wear it. The thing is while underway if there is an accident everyone might end up in the water and an unconscious person cannot help him/herself or anyone else. It is up to you to provide that safety net that will save you.
For some time I stopped using it. After the last death of a perfectly healthy adult when his boat capsized I got my senses back. Too bad it took someones else's life to be lost for me to wise up again. That man was a husband, dad, granddad. He will be missed a lot...

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I read today that 2/3 of all drowning victims had no intention of entering the water and most were 10-30 feet from safety. We wear jackets in case we become one of the 2/3 who had an unplanned aquatic adventure.

Just like in an auto...If I knew the exact time I was going to have an accident, I would wait until 30 seconds prior before putting that "uncomfortable" seatbelt on. Since I may have little input to the time or severity of the event, I wear my belt all of the time in the vehicle and jacket in the boat.

I think I'm going to invest in a few of those automatic inflatable PFDs. They look more comfortable and it looks like the prices are more reasonable now.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

My view on always having a PDF on changed when I was at the funeral of 3 people whose boat turned over in ruff water after a wave hit them. Six on the boat went into the water and 3 did not make it. When the boat was recovered they showed the life vest still stowed.
For me its the unexpected that happens that I might not be able too get my vest on.

I never, ever wear one while on the boat. I've been on and around boats all of my life, it's my choice, and I choose to not wear it. It's the law to wear one when you're doing watersports, which I do, but the question for the thread was do you wear it in the boat.

My answer is no. ;)

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I never leave the dock without my vest on. I bought an auto inflate so I can't tell I even have it on most of the time.

The question I have to aks is how of you many plan on having an accident when they leave the dock? How many can swim while unconscious if you where knocked out and ejected from the boat during an accident?

There where 4,967 times in 2006 that people left the dock not planning on having an accident. Of those 4,967 trips 710 of them never made it back to the dock alive.

I?ve personally attended two funerals in my life time where the victims died of drowning. The first drown while inner tubing in the Potomac River and the other drown while swimming in a quarry.

Both of these individuals where good swimmers. Apparently being a good swimmer just isn't wasn?t enough.

Do you fell lucky?

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I always have mine on when the boat is moving. A 14' runabout + rough water = an accident waiting to happen and I want to be as prepared as possible when and if an accident occours. I also wear it as it sets a good example for my little brother who often comes to the lake with me.

If the boat is not moving, either anchored or with someone else in the boat I will take it off. I also refuse to wear the PFD when I'm swimming.

I would find the PFD that is most agreeable with you and then just wear it, it only takes one mistake or accident and we don't have 9 lives.

I wear mine only if weather is inclement- but I'm also on small inland lakes. Sugarloaf Lake in Portage is about the largest I like to go on, since it keeps the skiiers off. But if I'm on a larger lake like Gun Lake, I'll toss one on, because there are a lot if idiots on that lake that could care less, and openly drink when boating.

Re: How often do you wear your life vest?

I put mine on to back the boat off the trailer, and keep it on unless we set anchor to fish. I did take time to shop several boating stores and even Walmart before buying my jacket, I wanted to be comfortable. Different brands and styles make a huge difference.
I boat on lake Texoma, we get windy and have lots of wave action. I have a 14'6 Fabuglas, just big enough to be a dinghy for some of the boats we see out here. When running down the lake some wakes are a challange and I feel safer knowing if I leave the boat suddenly I will be able to relax and decide where to swim to before starting to swim.

I use a Mustang infllatable vest that doubles for a fly vest. Yeah, it cost a bit, but it's comfortable.

I'd rather be not needing it wishing it was off, than needing it wishing it was on.
