Yes, once a year is 'traditional' for wooden boats that are kept in the water & see regular service. That said, ... for small trailer boats that are protected (keep a well ventalated cover on it), the painting schedule would be dictated much more by appearance. If you take good care of it & don't bang & scrape the paint all up you can go easilly 2 - 3 years or more between coats. Use a good quality oil base enamel for the best life & results.
