How often to replace water pump impeller

I have a 92 Mariner 115 that I have owned for about 4 years now. I always check to make sure that the little tell tale starts peeing right after start up. The boat only runs in a really clean fresh water lake. Is the water pump something I should change at some point just on spec or just leave it alone. This boat has no temp gauge and I do not know if it has a heat warning or what. The motor is on a 91 Regal is that matters.

TIA

Howdy BJM and welcome to the board. I think you'll find that most of the guys here on the board recommend re-building the water pump every year. You could probably get away with replacing it every other year if you had a water pressure gauge but without it, I'd do it every spring. You're way overdue. Grenaded engines are the results of a failed waterpumps. Very bad juju.

c/6

Hooty

Impellars can last several years. Simply monitoring water pressure and engine temp until a change is noted is not enough. What scares the heck out of me is the pieces of fragmented rubber off of a long overdue impellar which can find there way up into the water jackets and cause hot spots even after the defective impellar has been replaced. This could require power head removal.(not pretty on some)
Its cheap insurance changing the impellar ever few years. It also prevents the corroded marriage between the driveshaft and crankshaft.(don't forget to grease the splines)
:)
