how old is my Johnson 3hp

I have acquired an old Johnson 3hp outboard, model JW17, s/n B40654 and am curious as to the age of it. Also, I fired it up yesterday for the first time and it runs fine with throttle in the start position or higher but immediately shuts off if I throttle down from the start throttle position. Any ideas? Also, what is the proper fuel/oil ratio for this motor with the new type oils. I see it was listed at 24:1 from the factory. Thanks for the help, Bob

Your engine is a 1961 and probably has misadjusted linkage or clogged idle circuit in the carb.<br /><br />Please do not double post. This is the place for Outboard questions.<br /><br />Good luck.

I rebuilt the carb and had it out on the water this week. motor runs like a new one again. Thanks for the advise Bob
