Re: How old is your newest outboard?
My newest to oldest would go about as follows, 1995 Mercury 115hp, '86 Johnson 50hp, '85 Evinrude 30hp, '85 Honda 10hp stroke, '85 Johnson 70, '84 Evinrude 90hp, '82 Evinrude 9.9hp, '81 Johnson 9.9hp, '79 Johnson 15hp, '79 Johnson 55hp, '78 Johnson 6hp, 2 of '76 Evinrude 135hp, '73 Evinrude 9.5hp, '72 Evinrude 9.5hp, '72 Johnson 65hp, '71 Merc 40hp, '69 Johnson 55hp, '68 Merc 65hp, '65 Merc 85hp, plus a rack full of motors that I've not yet gone through or tried including many off brand smaller motors from Eska and Aqua Bug.
The only reason I have the 1995 115 Merc is because it came to me on a boat not running needing some work. Otherwise that boat would still have it's mid 70's Johnson on it.
I seem to prefer mid 80's Johnson/Evinrudes, they are the easiest to work on, seem to have the least problems and are pretty plentiful. The Mercs run well but the presence of some expensive parts makes me nervous. Not that I can't fix them, I don't care to pay for a major failure on one. For instance, try replacing a bad Mercury switch box or an older distributor cap at todays prices.
