Re: How old is your newest outboard?

My newest to oldest would go about as follows, 1995 Mercury 115hp, '86 Johnson 50hp, '85 Evinrude 30hp, '85 Honda 10hp stroke, '85 Johnson 70, '84 Evinrude 90hp, '82 Evinrude 9.9hp, '81 Johnson 9.9hp, '79 Johnson 15hp, '79 Johnson 55hp, '78 Johnson 6hp, 2 of '76 Evinrude 135hp, '73 Evinrude 9.5hp, '72 Evinrude 9.5hp, '72 Johnson 65hp, '71 Merc 40hp, '69 Johnson 55hp, '68 Merc 65hp, '65 Merc 85hp, plus a rack full of motors that I've not yet gone through or tried including many off brand smaller motors from Eska and Aqua Bug.

The only reason I have the 1995 115 Merc is because it came to me on a boat not running needing some work. Otherwise that boat would still have it's mid 70's Johnson on it.
I seem to prefer mid 80's Johnson/Evinrudes, they are the easiest to work on, seem to have the least problems and are pretty plentiful. The Mercs run well but the presence of some expensive parts makes me nervous. Not that I can't fix them, I don't care to pay for a major failure on one. For instance, try replacing a bad Mercury switch box or an older distributor cap at todays prices.

my Newest is a 2008 Yamaha25 hp that replaced the 72 Evinrude.Evin though the yamaha has way more power it takes 5 to 6 pulls to start it if it sits longer than a week. The 72 Evinrude can sit for a year and will start on the 1 to second pull every time and when warm half of a pull. The oldest is 2 Mark 5 1953 and 55

My oldest is a 1981 newest 1997 both are still like new due to short boating season in Canuck country.

And as someone hinted: I also prefer to stay away from the complications of modern technologies and do the maintenance myself ... for fun and $$

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

My first boat (in 1984) had a 1959 Evenrude on it and it ran flawlessly. That convinced me that 2 stroke outboards were a lifetime investment.

In 1998 I bought a 1998 SeaRay with a 115 Merc hanging off the back. When I bought it I was certain that I would never need another boat or motor.

Now, 10 (almost 11) years later I'm still pleased as punch with both the boat and motor. 800 hours and never a single problem, never left me stranded.

I plan on putting many more hours on my engine before it's all over...

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

My larger motor and the newest is a 115hp '02 Mercury and gets very little use. My 8hp mercury that I use for trolling is a 1990, and will be replaced before spring fishing starts up. I am looking at a 4-stroke Mercury or Tohatsu (not listed in the survey), because of the EPA and Carb ratings starting. I love fishing high mountain lakes, and it just a matter of time before the new regulations start on trolling motors.

Re: How old is your newest outboard?

Interesting thread to run across today, because I was talking to a friend 2 days ago, who has his 2006 Merc in the shop for major surgery .... for the third time since buying it as a brand new motor.

Yup, three major issues in three years.

I think I'll stick with old motors!
