How reliable is 50 hp 4 cyl 2s? Versus an I-6 90hp?

I have a chance to pick up an early 80's model that has good compression and seems to run ok. What type of problems do these motors tend to have? Of course I would have it gone through and have carbs rebuilt, new plugs, water pump, etc to get in tip top shape. What else might I need to do?

How are these motors on gas? Do they troll well?

I also have a lead on a I-6 90 hp which is a lot more motor than I need, but there is something sexy about the Tower of Power. How reliable are these motors and how bad are they on gas?

The boat I have is fairly flat and will handle up to 100 hp, but a 50 pushes it about 32 WOT on a friends boat that is the same as mine.

Any problems should be sorted out by what you plan to do. I would also suggest doing all the timing and synch too.

Being 2 strokes they don't troll as well as a 4, but they are cross-flow, so troll better than a more 'modern' loop charged 2 stroke. As for fuel, that's up to you. :D

Oh Yeah!!!! But I would only take that one if it's a 'non-distributor' engine...

See all I said above.

Strap yourself in!!! The 90 should push you up to the 40+ mark...
