b00tstrap,

I thought that quote was from me, but I used "hydrofoil" on your other thread. Whale tails or hydrofoils are aftermarket devices that I personally do not recommend. Anyway, the holes tell us that someone had one installed on that thing once before. Since you are looking at some welding, I would have the holes filled too.

Yes, a Skegard, could solve one of your three (four) problems, 1) The Skeg, 2) the AV plate chunk, 3) the prop, 4) the holes. Of all of these 4 is the least of your concerns. My thought is that if you are going to reapir the AV plate, then you might as well have them make you a new skeg instead of the Skegard. If you are going to leave the plate as is (bad idea) then you could use a Skegard and repair the prop. No matter what, you need to do something and it is my guess that you'll need some help. Take it to a local shop and get an estimate . . .

I posted the repair pricing I got in the other thread. Supposing I choose to go that option, can someone point me to some instructions for removing the lower? It looks like a reasonable reapir option.

Get an original (not afermarket or reprint, too many problems) service manual, it will pay dividends if you plan to DIY.

I saw a segmant on "SHIP-SHAPE" where they had a situation similar only they repaired an outboard.

He said that I/O's were repaired the same way. They actually had blank aluminum stock already prefabbed for welding on.

I agree, this should not be used as is. I don't think there is even enough left to use a skeg guard. Expensive mistake, for sure.

b00tstrap...the hole that you're pointing the red arrow at is the access hole for the socket head screw that attaches the anode.

I saw a bolt head down there. Is there supposed to be a rubber stopper or something that covers it?

yeah, there is supposed to be a pop-in cap there. I don't know how critical it is for it to be there.
