I have a 1999 alumacraft v16 boat with a 30hp honda on it,that I troll with a lot. I am thinking about going to a 40hp Suzuki fuel injected motor because I have had problems with my Honda carbs and I could use a little bigger motor. Any one familiar with the new Suzuki or Johnson 4strokes. I back troll for walleyes and need to troll fairly slow . The honda does a good job when it is running right.

Howdy, CBaker.

I would expect the Suzi/Johnny EFI DF40 to troll about as well or better than the carbed Honda 30.

Computer control makes a world of differrence.

Good luck. :)

I would think that the honda can get yo down to about 1.3 mph less when back trolling the 40 will have you in the same maybe about .2to .4mph more but you should be in the right range regardless.

If you don't need the extra top end speed why not consider a little less pitch on your prop? You'll get great holeshot as a bonus. You'll need to be more careful about over revving at WOT but your trolling speed will be nice and slow. Or you could just toss a bucket on a rope over the side. I'd go with it anyways, it's not as hard to make a boat go slower as it is to speed it up.
