how straight?

how straight am I supposed to fair my boat? sounds silly but im used to high end body work. I am fairing in low spots but what about waves in fiberglass.......I know the polyester prime will fix a lot of it. just wondering if you guys block and prime the boat or just smooth out everything jimmy

Unless youre gonna drag it to Barret Jackson, youll be shooting for a 10 footer...It wasn't perfect from the mold, and it wont be perfect after...I would spend the most time from the water line to the rub rail, and that's only if its color...if its a close bow, the bow deck is what you will see IMO

Some make it worse, trying to make it perfect....

its your boat, finish it the way you want. Im ok with a bit of imperfection along with seeing the slight orange peel of the fiberglass thru the gel, however I dont want to see grind marks

I agree with zool, I spent WAY to much time fairing the bottom of my hull and within 5 mins of the initial splash it was all amiss. It was just not worth it. Water line up is ALL that's important. The rest will be banged and dinged so just get it as good as you can and move on. Spend your time on the visible "Non Wear" areas.

its not gonna look like it was sanded with a rusty golf shoe. ill smooth out the dimples and spots that are really low thanks lol

wood how much work do I spend on the bottom? I know fixing po repairs and damage but how straight? can I sand it with a da with interface pad or do I need to block it straight

I'd take care of major scratches and gouges then use a good high build primer and get on with it. What Paint are you using?

I was going to gel coat but just decided im going to use Sherwin Williams genesis m. its extremely good stuff. ill polyester prime it then prime it with a primer that absorbs impact a bit. remember me the I don't paint anything for a hundred lol. I did want to share with you a great fill prime I found finish line is the label. urethane and under a hundred . sands great good fill jimmy

I forgot to mention my hull has the fine blisters on the stern and rear lower sides. been sanding that down with 36 grit oh boy im loving it jimmy

You might want to consider using the recommended primer for the Genesis Paint. I always like to use what the MFG recommends. It always seems to work out better that way. I've heard of Finish Line Primer. What's the price on a Gallon of the Genesis Paint?

Well........ you could go to the extreme and "Blueprint" the hull! It depends on the boat. High end racing boats are blueprinted and actually raises the top end. The primary reason is to remove ALL imperfections and ANY hook the hull might have. It is done with a straightedge and there are NO gaps. gaps as small as 1/16" are filled....... then there is a duplicating both sides of the hull....... the motor's lower unit also gets blueprinted. Blueprinting can give a good boat and motor combination increased top end.

Speed costs money. Your labor equals money................ how fast you want to go??

And remember, if all you do is sand down the blisters they will return if the boat is left in the water.

wood I wasn't sure which primer was recommended so that's why I was vague. im thinking it will be p30 or p50 but havnt asked. the genesis is around 300 a gallon plus hardener I have accelerator and reducer. I may try your rustoleum on the trailer though. ill see I may use the same as the boat. im sanding the blisters with 36 on a bondo hog....or 8 inch orbital for those that don't know. flat and taking them down till they are gone and fairing them back. the polyester primer is to get out the ripples the po put in it sanding the sides with a da. they painted it poorly but its stuck for the most part. im just stripping it with 36 and scratch refining with 80 on my finishing da and orbital long board.

Good on ya on those blisters!!! Sounds like you got a good handle on the rest as well. WOW that Genesis is some HIGH Dollar Stuff. Have you checked out TCP Global. They offer some quality "Thanes" for some great prices and have a "Full Line" of painting supplies.

I know I have said this before, but you are only repairing the blisters you can see at this time, there are noramally thousands more blister sites that are forming and just haven't erupted yet. so as time goes by, especially if the boat is left in the water, more will typically show up.

ondarvr, thanks for chiming in. im stripping off most of the blistered areas down to the gelcoat were there are pinholes are and building it back up. im going to seal the hull inside with a water proofing stuff. cant remember the name. the boat will be on a trailer not in the water full time. wood I have no choice, I know its high dollar but it goes far and is an extreme coating . you can even make it graffiti proof if you want to. I also have self healing clear coat, small scratches go away in the sun. jimmy
