How strong should my pee stream be?

I know, weird title. I'm refering to that stream of water that squirts out the side of the motor to tell me if my impeller is working or not. Last time I had the boat out (2 months ago..shame on me) it seemed alot stronger as I remember. Today, it seemed quite week, just kinda dribbling and lightly pouring out with hardly any pressure at idle and a light stream underway. I'm not sure if my memory is cloudy from lack of time on the water of if it indeed in an indication of a week impeller. Impeller was replaced just before I bought the boat aprox 6 months ago, only has maybe 10-15 hours on it since replacement.
motor is '83 Johnson 60HP 2-cylinder.

It could be a sign of an impeller problem but first i would make sure the rubber hose and fittings are clear.Bugs love to clog the hose up..
If you were running it on the muffs it could look weak also.

It should be a nice, hard stream. Check and see if the little tube that runs from the block to the telltale opening is stopped up. You might also run a little paper clip or something really gently up the telltale hole while it's running to see if you can remove the obstruction. Either way, you need to figure out what is the problem. If your water pump impeller is new, the problem is usually a stopped up telltale tube, at least on my motors, anyway.

At idle, mine shoots into the water about 2" deep. Course every engine is built differently and most are plumbed differently, so there are a lot of variables.

sounds like you got prostate issues...your outboard, I mean....it ought to be stronger than you described. unless you're running it dry, or maybe running it into sand bars, it shouldn't wear out that fast. or if the housing is scored and the prior owner only replaced the impeller.

follow the hose to the connection on the block, disconnect and run weedeater string, or something flexible but tough. Cape Coral, you probably have kritters in the hose., before reconnecting, start motor, you should get a strong stream out of the connection, it won't hurt anything just to check.

If your engine has a prostate problem feed it lots of cranberries, they are good for it. (sorry guys I just couldn't resist. I just read the spiders and walnut thread. ) :D:D:D

Re: How strong should my pee stream be?

Got trouble. I pulled the hose off the fitting in the block and have no water coming out. At least on Sunday I had some, today I have none with running with the muffs in the back yard. So, I guess tomorow I'll drag her down to the local shop to have it checked out.

If it needs another impeller, what kind of expense should/could I be looking at? Average? These guys only charge $60 per hour, I'm guessing a pro could do the job in maybe two hours?
