So I put a new prop on my 40hp Johnson which is held on by a castle nut. Me being a trailer mechanic thought it might be similar to a spindle nut so I tightened then backed off to the next spot on the nut to put in the cotter pin. Now it seems to have alot of end play. Can I go to the next opening with causing damage to the bearings?

Tighten the propnut to the specified torque, place the castle nut on, it might need to be lifted up, rotated a bit and refitted before you are able to slip the cotter pin in

Prop nuts tighten and then go to next that will fit, no back'sey off'sey . They should also be pretty tight but also depend on motor size, use a block of wood to keep prop from turning. Didn't find the 40hp but the 115hp is 55 ft lb.

The end play will probably still be there and is no issue.
