???----The flywheel is positioned by a key on the crankshaft.--The position of the flywheel can not be changed.----So it is better to post what your motor is doing or not doing.-That information may allow us to help you.

Guessing these may be timing marks. What size motor? There may a mark or indicator the marks will be timed either manually or with a timing light.

the motor is a 1989 Johnson GT150
the motor chugs when idling, like its missing and when throttled up, wont rreturn to the idle rpms, sits around 1100 up to 2200.
i talked to a mechanic/friend and he mentioned the needle on top of the motor and said to check that out so i was assuming he meant there was some sort of adjustment and the numbers on the flywheel made me guess it was some sort of adjustment

Thanks

i think he mentioned the timing could need adjusting, how would one do so? if not pertaining to the flywheel - Thanks

You have 2 timing grids on flywheel, you find TDC on cly#1 an mark it and same on cyl #2. Then measure distance between marks and that is true TDC. to set timing pointer. The running chitty could be ignition, fuel or flywheel problem as the hub magnet do slip...

The timing on these motors rarely changes or goes out of adjustment !!---Trouble shooting starts with a compression test.---Then check to see if you have spark that will jump a gap of 7/16" or more.--Perform those simple tests and report what you find.

The max timing on this engine is to be set when the engine is running over 5000 rpm's-under load, per the factory service manual. The timing degrees for your engine are usually on a label glued to the airbox cover of the engine. Max timing is set by comparing the 5000 rpm timing readings from both the #1 and #2 cyls, then setting the higher-reading cyl to the factory timing spec. Agree, it's unusual for the timing to get off unless there is a sheared flywheel key or the flywheel center timing ring has moved.

Have you made any adjustments on any screws in an attempt to get it running better? What I'm getting at is you may have messed up your link n sync (throttle, timing advance) by adjusting things at random.

i completely removed everything from the motor except the flywheel, cleaned, new gaskets, etc...reassembled and a new power pack, it started right up. recently ive just been fixing small things like trim and tilt and the boat itself. i have been playing around with the idle trying to get to 700 ish, it was at 1100. ive done so through the carb adjustment and idle screw. im no pro, but ive read up and feel like i have a semi accuartae idea, maybe not tho. the piece under the flywheel that advances as the throttle increases was stuck, after reeing that i was able to get a good idle of 650 ish

That procedure is spelled out in the factory service manual. It is called "sync and link". There are enough pictures along with the words to guide you through the factory procedure.

You need to remove the flywheel and clean up the timing plate so it moves freely. If it was stuck as you say,it will not float properly, even though you think it is.
