How to adjust shift cable - 140 i/o

Hey .. need help adjusting the shift cable on my 1985 3.0 140 merc I/O ..... before it would grind untill you pushed it farther down.. then clunk in a gooo.. and take off... my father says that i should be able to shift into gear.. and not more lol.. so the cable is new.. how to do i adjust to to shift nicceeee

You NEED the manual or a link to it. The adjustment procedure is very specific, there are measurements that have to be correct in order for it to shift in AND out of gear correctly.

Also all the grinding before could have killed the gears in the outdrive!:%

It should go into gear at idle without much of a clunk.

thanks alot guys... now i just have to wait for it to stop snowing again... so i can get out there and try and fire it up for the first time this season ..

any other tips on the first season start up ??
