I have a 197? 402 mercury outboard. This engine runs extreamly well, except that it was pull start only, well i removed the other flywheel and replaced it with an electric start flywheel, but also kept the pull start mechanism on the engine. The problem is that i did not pull the other flywheel off,i just unbolted it but i did not mark the location it was removed so i have no idea how it goes on to fire properly(not smart). When i pull it over it wants to start but the engine pulls the pullcord out of my hand. Please Help...

That model "should" have a keyway in the center hub. Or did you leave the center hub on the crankshaft and remove the outer hub to get the ring gear portion on? (I hope not, it's a real pain to get the flywheel lined up again!)

Let us know!

turn the crank till #1 is at TDC. Then put the flywheel on so the decal hits the pointer the same way. You only get 8 choices - LOL

-W

I think that there would be some indicator marks on the flywheel that indicate where TDC is. These are the marks that should be lined up with the TDC marks on the decal. On my engine they are three small holes on the side of the flywheel - like those made from a centre punch.

EDIT
Oops - sorry i just re-read your post and the penny dropped that the decal is on the flywheel - Sorry - My engine is a bit different. I just had a look in my book though and there seems to be a timing window on a frame around the flywheel (flywheel guard). at the top and bottom of the window is a raised section that seems to be the timing mark. Does this sound familiar?

hope this helps.

Cheers
Troy

There's got to be some kind of indicator thingie to point at the decal on the flywheel. For timing purposes. That's the one. :D

-W

You may have to put the recoil back on to find the timing mark...
- Scott
